The icons on my desktop for FC 2 have lock symbols in the corner of them. I read somewhere that it was a broken link that caused this but I'm not sure how to make it go away. sorry for the newbie questions. i'm quite the rookie at linux right now. :D

you can delete your ~/.gconf directory and GNOME will regenerate your configuration files with the default settings.
That should fix the icons to a usueable state.

To clarify thats /home/youruser/.gconf directory. ok?

A crossed out pencil icon means you can't write to a file, and a X symbol means you can't read it. But you were refering to a lock icon. Right click the desktop icon. On the emblems tag, uncheck lock. I don't think this does anything but puts a small icon in the corner of the large icon.
