I just installed F14 which generally went well. I then did an install of kmod-nvidia and now the system hangs on start up. I see a couple of warnings and failures regarding the nvidia.ko module, and then the startup script stops after Starting atd: [OK] The screen flashes a couple of times and then is non-responsive. I can't even seem to get to the command line to back out the kmod-nvidia installation.

Ideas?

did you follow leighs Nvidia thread?

No - I failed to remember to ALWAYS follow leigh's protocol. 8^(

Problem is, now I can't even get to the command line. Should I just do a reinstall or is there a way to push into a command line login?

when it hangs, try hitting ctrl-alt-F2 and that should bring you to a command line.

Did you do a complete yum update before installing the kmod-nividia? There were a few problems in the original packages that caused some problems with the nvidia drivers.

I'll give it a shot. I had tried yum update, but it gave me no updates, so I moved on to the nvidia drivers.

if you had just done a fresh install, you should have had tons of updates. Something wasn't right if you had no updates unless you had the update repos added to the repo list when you installed.

There was one particular update to x86config.py that fixed an error on bootup with the nvidia drivers, but the error didn't keep it from booting if you had followed Leigh's guide and did the manual edit of xorg.conf that he specified.

If you get to the command line, check for errors in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and see what it tells you.

During install I had the option to add repos, so I put in rpmfusion free and nonfree. I assumed it had done the updates in process with the install.

Ctrl-Alt F2 did the trick. I was able to yum erase kmod-nvidia, but yum update still says no updates found. During installation, I had added the rpmfusion update repos, so I assumed it updated in process.

From the Xorg.0.log file, it looks like a video card problem. I see a list of drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/cardXX with XX being from 0 to 15. Then two error lines:

[drm] failed to open device
No devices detected.

with you yum problem, do you get a metadata error? i believe there is a thread on this issue. try using OpenDNS to solve your yum issue

what video card are you using?

I have heard of several people not being able to get a few particular cards to work with the nvidia drivers...
