Hi,

I am running Fedora 13 and I have a linksys WRT54G wireless router [1,2]. I'm having a strange problem. I'm using a computer connected to the router via a wired connection. At intermittent moments the connection seems to stop. I can't even ping the router (192.168.1.1). However, if I make NetworkManager reconnect to eth0 the connection immediately comes back and I can ping the router and navigate to websites. If I wait a random amount of time the connection also seems to comes back on its own (without reconnecting via NetworkManager).

Any idea if this is a hardware (router) problem or a software problem? This didn't happen a month ago.

P.S: I have already updated to the latest firmware (Ver.8.00.8).

Thanks,

I've worked with two of those routers which developed intermittent stupidity. The final solution I used in both cases was eventual replacement of the router.

I am currently on my 3rd WRT54G. This one has been working OK for the most part but it does have it's moments. No more Linksys for me.

Dan,

That's what I'm thinking too... but I just wanted to confirm if there is anything else I can try before buying a new one.

Thanks,

+1

Mine misbehaved in a similar fashion until I flashed dd-wrt (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) onto it. After that it would still run into situations it locked up tight enough to require a hard reset.

I think the hardware on those units is just dodgy. <insert obligatory warning that there's always a risk that flashing a router can brick the unit> If you're really pulling your hair out over the issue and planning on buying a new one, trying dd-wrt might be worth it as a last ditched effort if you don't mind risking bricking it.
