A reason to try koji kernel-2.6.35.6-34.fc14

On my x86_64 system, recent kernels have been plagued by poor performance and high CPU loads, but I've been running them because of the security fixes and recommendation found here (https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/kernel-2.6.35.4-28.fc14?_csrf_token=a63868caaf92f33141440b7c835e44 fee8b61115). As discussed in this post (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=252129), there was a bug in gcc-4.5.1-3.fc14 which was used to build the recent kernels. Kernel-2.6.35.4-26.fc14 through kernel-2.6.35.6-33.rc1.fc14 were built with the buggy gcc. If you're running one of those, you should try kernel-2.6.35.6-34.fc14. For me, the performance improvement is huge.

EDIT: From reading the bug report, it looks like this may only apply to 64 bit kernels.

If you read the kernel changelogs (for example, this one (http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=197922)), there has also been some issues with the scheduler, which should be fixed now.

True, but according to that change log, the patches for the scheduler issues were made to kernel-2.6.35.5-29 through kernel-2.6.35.6-33.rc1. All of those kernels, including -33 with all the scheduler patches, were poor performers for me. They were also all compiled with the buggy version of gcc. According to the change log, no more scheduler fixes were added to the -34 kernel. However, it was the first kernel compiled with the new gcc. That leads me to conclude that the buggy compiler is a more likely cause of the performance issues than the scheduler fixes.

I'm using the .33 kernel with my F13 laptop. None of the 2.6.34 kernels will play nice with this machine. My only problem is the broadcom-wl driver. It seems it needs a couple of patches to compile. During boot up the akmod tries but fails the build. I was wondering how any one else is fairing with the wl drivers.

@GoinEasy9: I'm wondering if you forgot to put on your reading glasses... That's a dash in front of the 33 and 34, not a period. :p The kernels I was speculating about are all different releases of the 2.6.35 kernel. :)

P.S. I know all about reading glasses, I've been using them for most of the last decade! :cool:

Hah, your right, I was talking about the 2.6.35 kernels, and I meant -33.
And I'm wearing glasses!!!
