Hi, everyone. We have one bug remaining for Fedora 14 whose blocker status is unclear:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=596985

Two reporters in the bug - John Reiser and Mike Chambers - and one reporter from test list - Rui He, http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/test/2010-August/092583.html - report that the screen is blanked when the installer starts X on various Radeon adapters when booted with default options. The system is still running and you can switch to a virtual console to get logs - see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=596985#c36 - but the screen is permanently blank until reboot. When booted with 'basic video driver' - which, due to an anaconda bug, actually results in the use of the radeon driver, but with kernel modesetting disabled - the installer is able to run X normally, for all three. One further reporter, Chuck Forsberg - http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/test/2010-August/092581.html - had problems with both default and 'basic video mode' (radeon+UMS).

Jerome Glisse reports that he was able to start X and see the display in the installer with one or some of his own test cards.

What we need here is more data. So it would be really useful if everyone with a Radeon video adapter could test this. It's fairly quick and easy and doesn't require you to actually complete an install. Just get the boot.iso for RC3 (currently) or RC4 (later today, likely) - the boot.iso for RC3 is at http://serverbeach1.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/14-Alpha.RC3/Fedora/x86_64/os/images/boot.iso or http://serverbeach1.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/14-Alpha.RC3/Fedora/i386/os/images/boot.iso - boot it, and see if you can make it to the graphical stage of the installation process. Please reply here, and if you observe the same problem as the reporters, add your details to the bug report (also test the 'basic graphics driver' choice, and report whether you used rc3 or rc4, and x86-64 or i386). Thanks!

Results from testing with RC3:

x86_64 - RV710 Radeon HD 4350 - fail (blank screen after "Running anaconda" message)
x86_64 - RV620 Mobility Radeon HD 3400 - fail (blank screen after "Running anaconda" message)
i386 - RV350 Radeon 9600 - pass

I then retried both the failing systems with the basic graphics driver option and both worked OK showing the graphical install screens correctly.

Fails here in all cases using: 128MB Radeon 9000.
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 If [Radeon 9000] (rev 01)
I tested using RC4 boot.iso, i386

Tried regular install, fails after loading anaconda 14.15 with blank screen, monitor goes into power saving mode.

Tried basic video driver install, fails after loading anaconda 14.15 with blank screen, monitor still alive.

Tried moving monitor to both VGA and DVI connectors same result.

Thanks a lot, folks. If you could attach logs from the failures - if possible, if the system is still running but with a blank screen, as in the original report - to the bug, that would be really helpful. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=596985#c36 for instructions.

The other thing it would be useful to know, if possible, is if the live image works. You can grab RC4 live images here:

http://serverbeach1.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/14-Alpha.RC4.live/

just grab it and boot it; let us know if it works. Any edition is fine, whichever you like. You don't need to install unless you want to :)

LiveCD of RC4 (64 bit, LXDE) boots succesfully on my system with a Radeon HD 4650 card. I also installed it and have not noticed serious bugs.

The live CD RC4 starts up and correctly displays the initial anaconda screens for these cards in my systems:

x86_64 - RV710 Radeon HD 4350
x86_64 - RV620 Mobility Radeon HD 3400
i686 - RV350 Radeon 9600

I tried out the install on the i686 system and it completed normally. It has the new Gallium driver giving OpenGL version 2.1

$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600]

$ glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org R300 Project
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on RV350
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.9-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20

Thanks a lot for the feedback, folks. For those who were affected by this bug, a boot.iso with a proposed fix for this bug is available at http://adamwill.fedorapeople.org/boot.iso . If you were affected by this issue, please test this and let us know if it works okay.

Thanks!

Using: 128MB Radeon 9000.
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 If [Radeon 9000] (rev 01)

Normal install: now Passes, graphical install proceeds.

Install with basic video driver: still Fails, black screen, monitor not in powersave mode, keyboard inoperative.

Using the updated boot.iso...

Normal install:
RV710 Radeon HD 4350 - pass
RV620 Mobility Radeon HD 3400 - pass
RV350 Radeon 9600 - pass

Basic graphics driver install:
RV710 Radeon HD 4350 - pass
RV620 Mobility Radeon HD 3400 - pass
RV350 Radeon 9600 - fail - black screen, monitor not in powersave mode, keyboard inoperative.

Looking back, I never tested the RV350 system with the boot.iso RC3 version and the basic graphics option, so I tried it just now. It gives a message that X failed to start and offers a VNC or Text installation instead, the initial few screens of the text version display correctly.

just a quick hint: I compiled the latest xf86-video-ati and had the same blackscreen effect on my patched F13. I'm using the latest 2.6.35 with kms.
