I noticed that when I got home from work and opened the lid on my Laptop it was incredibly hot. I have since noticed that the screen doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. This can't be very good for it. Has anyone got any Ideas about htis?
Cheers

What are the details of the laptop? Brand/model?
Some laptops can be controlled to hardware turn-off the monitor when the lid closes, some rely on software, and a few have no switch to determine screen position (that is rare though).
even if you run a blanking screen saver, unless it specifically powers off the display, the display backlight WILL stay on, it just blacks the screen out...
you might also check for a keyboard switch (usually Fn + (key)) to toggle an external display. many laptops will toggle 3 ways:
internal only
internal AND external
External only (which usually powers off the backlight)
if yours has that you could try toggling off the internal display before closing the lid.

I also noticed this issue with Fedora Core 2, wheras under RedHat 9 the machine was suspended (display and most hardware switched off, but not "suspend to disk").
I think this may be related to the power management utilities (either acpi or apm depending on which works with your laptop). Under RedHat 9 I believe the power management utilities could detect the closing of the lid (as kf6kmx mentioned) and trigger the appropriate behaviour, however, it appears that Fedora Core 2 doesn't out of the box.
Does anyone know how to set this up under FC2?
