Hello

I was hoping to completely eradicate Windows 98SE from the hard drive (it hasn't been the same since a virus hit it anyway). Now one of my lecturers says I'd probably still need it for my Java subject next semester i.e. for accessing the university web site and for the Java sdk.

From what I understand, what I have to do (after backing up data) is reformat the drive, install Windows 98SE etc, defrag the drive then put the Fedora Core 1 CD in the drive. Is this correct? Can I resize the partitions afterwards?

My PC is:
Pentium 2-350 Mhz
448 mg PC100 SDRAM
8 gig hard drive (plus 10 gig hard drive for Windows NT4. Both hard drives in removable brick mounts i.e. one hard drive in at a time)
64 mb ATI Radeon 7000 Video Card
SoundBlaster 64 card
HP 5550 Inkjet printer
KTX 56k external modem
Liteon CD reWriter and Liteon DVD Reader.

I've been using Knoppix 3.4 just from the CD reWriter just to get a feel for Linux. Also, one of my lecturers said to stick with a version of the Linux kernel that ends with an even number. He said that the stable versions end in an even number. I'm just a newbie so I'm just going by what he said but I'd be interested to hear what other people think.

Thanks

If you like to install Fedora Core 1 after Win98SE, I suggest to do a partition with software like Partition Magic. It is possible to ajust the partition in Fedora installation set up but I found harder to use in my personal view.

Since you move from Knoppix, Fedora use a format called RPM for different application but you stll can install as source.

As for using Java, check out Fedora FAQ (http://www.fedorafaq.org) to install Java.

You can work without problems with Java on Linux. And if you need Windows just for access of some pages, why not just installing VMWare with Win98?
