I tried it a few months ago and had that issue also. But I do like the new gnome. It should get better as time go on and the bugs worked out.

The gnome shell is a bad idea product, I would like the Menu provided in SuSE enterprise desktop linux and Mint Main menu.

I'm able to access gnome-shell through desktop effects. This version is definitely more stable, although I can't get rid of the transparencies. I don't know if I'm missing something, or it's because I'm running it with the nouveau/mesa experimental drivers. I'll have to play with it a bit more, and also try it though the terminal to see if that makes any difference.

Only problem I saw so far is that it decreases my default workspaces to one, and that doesn't come back when I turn it off. That no big deal, let's see how everything else works before I start criticizing.

Edit: Well, I opened it up in terminal, then opened Chrome, and everything froze but the mouse pointer. But, after cold boot, opening through Desktop Effects, I now have the transparencies of the apps back to normal. Hey, the blow up fixed something, Heh. It seems they have a lot of work to do. I'm also going to have to find some more documentation, there has to be some way of customizing/personalizing the desktop activities, even in this early release.

I think it's the experimental driver, GE9. Check my post in the other thread.

Cool, AWN works in Gnome-shell! So now I have all the applets I need. :D

You get 3D effects without the experimental drivers??? This I've got to check out. BBL

Edit: Didn't work for me. Erasing experimental drivers just get me a notification that 3D is not available. Is there something that I'm missing?

An Intel 945GM chipset? :p It's always run compiz with the regular drivers. But then again, it sure isn't much of a 3D screamer either.

always check to see what videocard the other person is using before you jump to conclusions

Ahhh.... very interesting. BTW - Jumping to conclusions wasn't exactly what I was doing. Jumping to confusion is more like it. :D

its plain obvious a 3D driver has to be installed for Gnome-shell to work, i cant see how you came to the conclusion that it would of worked without a 3D driver installed

You might try erasing mesa-dri-drivers-experimental-7.9-0.1.fc14.i686, GE9. Compiz works fine here with the non-experimental drivers after the update.

The End....

I have been playing some with Gnome-shell. I have a I915 video card and the shell looks pretty snazzy with this older card. When I use the desktop-display instead of "gnome-shell --replace" the transition works better giving me my toolbars back but only one desktop. sftp with rhythmbox seems sketchy loosing the mount randomly.

Over all I think the shell is cool  it might be a little buggy but, hey, this is rawhide.

Nearly identical with the version found on Fedora 13 which I now daily use.

Yes, it's still working on F13 (version 2.29), but, the update to gnome-shell yesterday (to version 2.31) in rawhide made it a bit more stable. The transparency problems I had (all apps were transparent) seemed to be fixed. For the first time I was able to use it as a desktop without something freezing. I guess I'm going to have to put up an install and taint it with the Nvidia blobs in order to see its full potential. I was excited when I saw the mesa experimental updates today, after the gnome-shell update yesterday, I was looking forward to using it more regularly. Oh well, I never expected Rawhide to be without problems.

kyryder, if you click on the Activities button, and then look below the lower right of the desktop background, do you see a + button? If you do, click it to get a second desktop. Playing around with AWN in intelihide mode has made things more useful. See the attached screen shot.

Thank you dd_wizard,

Nice screen shot, Looks snazzy . I found the button and it works great :) thanks, I still lose a desktop (from 2 to 1) when I leave the shell and go back to standard, but it's not that big a deal to me. I can live with it ;)

Thanks,

Ky

I'm jealous. I'm setting up the lappy with the Intel i915 graphics with rawhide so I can play too.

Too many low bridges with nouveau. I want to see what Intel looks like. I'll keep the nouveau install also, somebody has to tell them when their screwing up. :D

Yeah, I have tried nouveau but it always seems to get in the way of my water wings. ;) Intel adds a little floatation allowing me to bob up and catch a breath every once in a while and not completely drown.

Hi there,
I have FC14. I tried to install gnome-shell, but when I try to use it it doesn't work... has something been broken recently?!?

I get a desktop without panels, just the icons and the controls in the windows don't work :(
