View Full Version : Linux quality steadily dropping

Punching out

The worst OS ever!

I just tried Fedora 13 and swore never to use Fedora again. In fact, I am leaning towards not using any “free” (free if your time is worthless) distributions of Linux again. The past year or so practically all free Linux distributions have taken a nosedive straight into the toilet. Once more again, you get what you paid for…

I was happy with Fedora 8 and used it for quite a while, even while 9 was out there. However, when F10 was released I decided to install it. I found it substandard, so I gave up Fedora and moved to Ubuntu for a while.

Ubuntu 9.04 was great, I am still using it on one of my desktops and I have no complaints. On that same desktop I tried Ubuntu 9.10 and was appalled by the sudden drop of quality. One day I couldn’t log on to my box anymore, regardless of which ID I used. The online posts recommended that I reinstall the OS! So, I reinstalled Ubuntu 9.04. When Ubuntu 10.04 was released, I installed it on my IBM T60p laptop. I could never get the network working, so I gave up and looked around for another distro.

I remembered using Mandrake a lot in the 90s, so I installed Mandriva One. It was even worse than Ubuntu. Same network problems, couldn’t change the display resolution, was painfully slow, shady quality, etc. Basically, the whole things was unacceptably bad. So, it joined the other “free” Linux “operating systems” in the garbage bin.

Yesterday, when Fedora 13 came out, I immediately downloaded and installed it on the same IBM laptop. I worked on the network connections for a few hours but couldn’t get either the wired or wireless connections working. I sadly noted that the same dysfunctional pile of garbage Network Manager is still there and still doesn’t do squat. In the 21st century we have an OS that doesn’t work on a network! OMG! What a pile of crap! Who released this garbage? Anyway, while I was trying to vent my frustration I also discovered that if I use the laptop with its docking station, then the screen resolution defaults to 1024 x 768 which is another letdown. So, I attempted to change it to the usual 1400 x 1050 but didn’t succeed. After applying the changes it just went back to 1024 x 768. I gave up and restarted. Upon reboot a surprise waited for me: F13 didn’t boot, just hung with a bunch of garbage on the screen right after the boot menu. I am giving up. I don’t have time for this. I need operating systems to USE not develop.

Knowing how much Linux fans like to throw mud at Windows, I have to laugh. I’ve been using XP since it was released at home and at work, for both business and pleasure (games, whatever). I NEVER had any issues with XP. Never ever! It’s a remarkably stable and well designed OS and puts Linux to shame anytime anywhere. Vista was a bit of a flop, I uninstalled it quickly, however Windows 7 is a great OS again. Guys…. Your “free” Linux is at least 40 classes behind Windows now. Linux is so far behind it’s not funny anymore and the gap is growing. The free versions of Linux have degenerated into total garbage lately. You still can get good Linux but you have to pay for it cause they are corporate owned commercial OSs now.

At least I can get a good, working copy of Windows free when I buy a new computer. I am punching out and returning to Windows. I am not alone.

It surely ain't free as in thought and isn't free as in beer either: You pay for it.

Network Manager does work, and Fedora does work on networks. But your issue could be a hardware issue.

Anyway, while I was trying to vent my frustration I also discovered that if I use the laptop with its docking station, then the screen resolution defaults to 1024 x 768 which is another letdown. The docking port may not be letting EDID info pass through, you might need to hook the monitor up directly to get it identified. Saw a thread about it recently. You could also tell X to ignore EDID and set the supported resolution directly.

I NEVER had any issues with XP. Never ever!

I did, mostly pre SP 1 though.

At least I can get a good, working copy of Windows free when I buy a new computer. I am punching out and returning to Windows. I am not alone.

It's not free, it's included in the price.

a lot of the problems with modern linux distro's comes from the use of NetworkManager.

if you roam a lot and use 3g or wifi with dhcp, then sure try and use nwm; but if you are using a desktop machine with a static ip, throw nwm in the trash and use the network service; i really can't believe that rhel6 is using nwm ON SERVERS!

fedora is going the way of ubuntu too much - dumbing things down to the point they no longer even work.

Very strange that a person who's used F8 for "quite awhile" and F10 briefly found it necessary to join and post this now. Naturally, since he didn't head over to the FedoraProject site for his post, it's not reaching the devs. Oh well, he took the time to write. Shame it's not being listened to.

I really don't understand all the vitriol directed at Network Manager. Works fine for me and pretty much always has on machines where I'm jumping from wireless network to wireless network.

Sure, it's totally silly to run NetworkManager if you're cabled up to the same switch 24/7, or if you set a static IP, but NM just works for me. Fedora 12 was a train wreck on my desktop last time I tried it, and the only install I've run on 13 was totally ugly (but fixable), but in all cases the TCP/IP stack on Fedora has always worked for me even when the rest of the OS has been unstable.

Sheesh, man. It's not the only distro and Windows doesn't always "just work" either. I don't care what the Windows fanboys and marketing say. And I'm pretty darn sure that the people who loudly "criticize" any distro are just a vocal minority.

@Leigh: I don't think the OP is trolling, but I don't expect him to come back.

... but I don't expect him to come back. One can only hope.

We could spend the next six to eight hours dissecting the blatant flaws in both logic and argument, but it would do exactly diddly-squat constructively.

Better to spend time crying in my (O'Douls) beer.

Explanation in a Wibble thread (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1363711) to follow.

I can understand his frustration although I can't share it because F13 is a dream come true for me LoL

The monitor issues from F10,11 and 12 are gone no more crooked screens for me, no more EDID hacking, nomodeset, skipddc or modelines.

Network Manager always worked even in F10 where there was a bug that I had to disable it and use network instead.

My 120GB USB drive is back to life after being lost in F12, for some reason it now works great, when in F12 if I rebooted or unmounted it it would corrupt something and never come back and I don't know why to this day, but I don't care.

Flash was a breeze to install in 64 bits I couldn't believe.

Yum is working, rpmfusion doesn't give me grief anymore.

Now I'm going to install the nvidia drivers because I need the 3D working. Hope it doesn't brake LoL
After enduring a trainwreck in F12 I'm happy again.

Well, after due review of the post and the poster, he joined the day of the post; executed same and logged out, not bothering to come back to look at comments or to take further interest. That, in my estimation qualifies him as a Troll and this thread as worthless.

As such, he's deleted and Thread Closed.
