I was able to set the default size of the terminal using gconf-editor up until recently. Changing the values in apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/default for default size columns and rows no longer has any effect.
Does anyone have any ideas what has changed? Or how to accomplish the same task?

I've always edited the launcher to read "gnome-terminal --geometry=96x32". Change 96x32 to whatever number of columns and lines you want.

Thanks dd,_wizard, that's sounds like it will work. Will give it a shot till I get home.
