View Full Version : Brother MFC-5460CN wont print

I am unable to get a Brother MFC-5460CN printer to print on a fully updated F12 system.
Everything looks normal in Administration | Printing
All fields match the format shown on the Brother site.
The printer status is updating correctly so there is communication to the printer.
But jobs just queue and eventually show as printed but nothing is actually printed. There are no other printers.
Here is the output in /var/log/messages from plugging in the printer and trying to print a document:

I followed the instructions on the Brother Linux drivers page and all the rpms loaded without error. But the log is showing some type of key problem. Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Yes, the printer is connected by USB.

what shows kde-menu>applications>settins>default printer?

This machine is running Gnome and when I go to System | Administration | Printing, it shows the printer "Brother-MFC-5460CN" with a green check mark on it which I think means default printer.
Yes, I just tried doing "Print current page" from gedit and it tries to print it to the above printer. So, the default printer is set.
What is puzzling here is that before we upgraded this machine to F12, it was on F7 and we had this printer installed and working just fine.

ok
very strange, i got an DCP-585CW all in one from brother, and with the rpms provided by brother i got the machine to work, either printing and scanning.

This looks like either a kernel issue or some type of problem in the Brother drivers. But we had this printer working with F7 just fine before we upgraded to F12 so I do not think it is the Brother drivers unless they changed them. I think it might be kernel.

I tried that already and selinux is disabled until I get the printer working. It didn't change anything.
I tried creating a whole new printer and then disconnected the usb, plugged it back in and tried printing a document. What's strange is that the kernel thinks the printer is using IPP protocol but the printer URI shows USB protocol. Here's the messages log:

Bought a small switch and configured the printer on the network and got it working that way.

Hi guys i bought a brother dcp-375cw. i Havent opened the box yet. Dick Smith(the retailer where i bougt itnfrom) has a 14 day change of mind return policy. i don't actually want to open the box or use it unless i know it will work with Mandriva 2010. I have a media center at the moment which was running mandriva 2009 fine with my old Epson Stylus C61. Altho this prinyter seems to be on it's last legs.
Has anyone got this printer to work with a free distro either F12, or mandriva 2010?.
My laptop runs F12.
thanks

@wasimsouk, you might want to ask a moderator to move your post to a new thread, with a title including your printer name. Most people who look at this will be looking because they might know about the Brother MFC-5460n, rather than your model.
(Don't start a new thread now, it would be a double post, which is against forum guidelines.)

I am having a similar problem with a Brother MFC-420CN. The printer was working fine under F11. I upgraded to F12 and it stopped printing. CUPS shows the jobs complete ok but nothing is actually printed. I have deleted the printer, removed the MFC packages, re-installed the packages without any success. Brother support walked me through their troubleshooting process and said it should work. They said the settings in CUPS are correct. I get the following 2 lines in the CUPS error log:
E [16/Jun/2010:12:46:22 -0400] [CGI] Unable to create avahi client: Resource temporarily unavailable
E [16/Jun/2010:12:46:22 -0400] [cups-deviced] PID 1529 (dnssd) stopped with status 1!
Even though CUPS reports the job has completed successfully there is no entry in the page log for the job.
I am running CUPS version 1.4.2.
This is my first time posting something on the forum. If this is the wrong place please let me know.
Thanks.

Well, it's a different printer, so it might have been best to just start a new thread, however, this isn't awful (that you posted it here.) Just you might get more views of people familiar with your printer.
I would try disabling SELinux. Not sure what avahi client would have to do with it.
It might of course, just be a cups thing--they're owned by Apple (we don't care, you'll buy our stuff anyway), so....
Doing a quick google came up with this ArchLinux forums post, where he fixed it by editing clients.conf (Googled cups create avahi)
