View Full Version : What's Gnome 2.29 look like to you?

I installed the necessary deps and gnome 2.29 from koji, but I sure didn't get anything like 2.28 or what's shown here (http://www.webupd8.org/2010/02/gnome-shell-2290-released-whats-new-and.html). Basicly, my screen looked like I was running gnome/metacity with the normal panel, not the 2.28 top panel with Activities, etc. Did I miss something?

Uhm ... honestly?

It's a flippin' grotesque mess which should have been aborted with extreme prejudice at the very first meeting whence the initial introduction of drawings and discussion of the concept was initiated.

Should they choose to limit one's choice to return to a classical Gnome/panel interface, being a rabid dis-admirer of KDE tends to make me think it might be time to re-consider my opinion of Macs.

But that's just one man's rather milquetoast opinion.

You do realize that gnome 2.29 and gnome-shell 2.29 are two different things right? Your link talks about gnome-shell.

Have you tried Xfce? If not, I'd suggest it, it's quite like Gnome2, and even better in many ways.

I believe gnome-shell to be "broken" in F13 at the moment and will hopefully be fixed for the beta release. Gnome-shell can be accessed from the "desktop effects" menu and I'm looking forward to having it available on my netbook running F13. :)

@JEO: Sorry about the title, I did mean gnome-shell 2.29. It's in koji, with a few deps you need to grab.

@ryptyde: gnome-shell 2.28 seemed to work fine in F13, but it does look like 2.29 is broken atm.

@Dan: I'm thinking LXDE, personally. :D PS, mind changing my lame title? Thanks.

Hmmm. Got any suggestions?

Just make Gnome into gnome-shell. That'll clear up any confusion.

PS, Feel free to add any derogatory comments that come to mind! :p

Thanks,

Leigh, is that 2.29.1-3 or -4? I tried -3 yesterday and see that -4 landed in koji today.

Can somebody check their versions against mine. I only get the background image and a hang when I select gnome-shell from Desktop Effects.

The gnome-shell is certainly a wild break from what we are used to. I could not figure out a way to add applets such as launchers or hardware sensors monitor to the top bar. (Also I prefer bottom bars).

I hope you can avoid installing the shell. I LOVE the new GNOME icons.

Applets are not supported in GNOME Shell yet.
