Really? When was the last time you heard someone refer to a Fedora release by codename as opposed to the last time you heard someone refer to an Ubuntu release by codename?

Besides, what does your personal opinion of any other distro have to do with my personal opinion that "Goddard" is a lame codename and "ROCK IT!" and even lamer slogan :confused:

Personally, I like the name Goddard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_H._Goddard) for a new release of Fedora, after all... linux is rocket science! :p Ok, lame pun, but he did build the first liquid-fueled rocket. ROCK IT! is a pretty good play on words, imho.

What? With that tired old "Ubuntu's codename isn't any better" line? That's about as tired as the "The dev's don't monitor this forum" line. ;)

It just seems like some people will take any opportunity whether it's relevant or not. We get it, you hate Ubuntu, though for some reason you think Mint is the greatest... :rolleyes:

do0d?

But in any case, I'm done with drama, there's no need to derail a perfectly good thread. Later.

Oh, and Greg, please observe the Posting Rules and no "leet speak". ( Wow, it's been 4 years since anyone else used it. Talk about being behind the times.... :D) Kidding.

Maybe we need a new poll: Codenames For Distros - Are They Lame? Regarding Fedora codenames, the reason we don't use them is that they're not abbreviatable. From the very beginning, and despite any inherent lameness, Ubuntu's alliterating code names were, and continue to be,abbreviatable. Conclusion: we need more complex, alliterating codenames for Fedora! :p

The dev's don't monitor this forum so any complains about the code-name and slogan will go unnoticed... :D :D :D

I'm off to suggest a new code name for the F14 to them. Rather than link to prior names, I think it's appropriate to tailor it to past and present user experiences.... Therefore "Oh, !*$*%*& !!! " :D

(hmmm...now why is our language censor treating PulseAudio as a swear word? :rolleyes:)

I don't know of anybody I've heard refer to Fedora by its release name. Actually, other than Ubuntu and Apple I really don't hear anybody use the release names.

Fedora 7 and 8 were the only releases with cool codenames: Moonshine and Werewolf respectively. I don't care about them, but they have been kind of esoteric.

If I install Goddard (lol) will I be able to keep upgrading it all the way through final (via Yum, not a series of clean installs)?

thanks as I want to test it.

I did that with F12 pre-alpha and it worked great, ElPenguino. I'm doing it again with F13.

Wow, if my kid drew that, not only would it not go on the fridge but I wouldn't bother wasting any more money on art related supplies.

Goddard as in *Robert* Goddard (the father of American rocketry, and, in a broad sense, of modern aerospace)? What's lame about him? (Without Goddard, not only would there have been no NASA, there would have been no NOAA as we know it, either, as NOAA's meteorological satellites are based mostly on Goddard's early rocketry experiments).

So I say Goddard is a lame codename for a distro, which it is, and you somehow jump from that to me saying that someone, in this case Robert Goddard, is lame :confused:

By the way, I also think Gandhi, Tutu, Tubman, ... would be lame codenames. ;)

you cant hate it that much if you hang here ;)

I don't hate it at all. Matter of fact, even after quite a few crummy releases/decisions, at least as far as I'm concerned, I still have hope for Fedora.

Which probably can mean that we can attribute GPS satellites as well?

Thanks for the historical information. They should promote this aspect a little more so people can have an understanding WHY the name/person was picked.

Wow - I hope you are just being subtly sarcastic - cuz that logic stinks like a 3 week old fish Most NOAA satellite were lofted on the conventional Delta lauchers (still used regularly) derived from the PGM-17 Thor circa 1959 - a very early cold war missile system - intermediate range with nukes. The engines were the SM-65 Atlas engines derived from the earlier SM-64 Navaho booster (liquid fuel booster then a ramjet), but the SM-65 was also a descendent of the Hiroc which owes a lot of heritage to the German rocket program. So if you use lousy attribution logic we can attribute NOAA satellites to Goddard, Hermann Oberth, Werner von Braun, Nixon, Hitler, or Joe Stalin. Makes no sense. Ppl get credit for their direct work, and a little homage for the works derived from theirs. Shakespeare wrote the sonnets - the guy who invented the alphabet doesn't get credit.

Goddard was certainly an admirable character - both theoretician and engineer/implementer/experimenter but not the sole creator of spaceflight.
==

I think it's an absolutely fine Fedora name- after all we have a history of lame forgettable F'names and this one fits the bill. I understand the "is a" logic is ...
Constantine => Konstantin Tsiolkovsky is Rocket Scientist => RH Goddard is a Rocket Scientist.

My suggestion for F14 is Chicxulub
Goddard => Goddard is a crater(lunar) => Chicxulub is a crater (Yucatan).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_Crater

Many possible slogans,
"Chicxulub - time for a change !",
"Chicxulub - death to dinosaurs",
"Chicxulub - mass extinction (of package revs) is coming",
"Chicxulub - It's gonna be h*ll till the dust settles".

Glad to input the historical datum.

And GPS indeed owes a debt to Goddard (and to Sputnik, as one of the preceding uses of geolocation was based on Sputnik's location in space; tracking via Sputnik's beeps).
