Hello all. I figured this would be the appropriate place to say hi.

I'm coming from Ubuntu. I'm not happy the direction they're headed. I tried an Arch install but failed miserably. I settled on Fedora. Quite an interesting distro. I already ran into a few problems that I was able to fix by going through the forums. Looks like I have to strap my learning hat back on. :/

It looks like Fedora is much freer but at the same time, you have to think a little more. I'm okay with that!

Well, the big thing is that I don't think they're going in the right direction as far as loading your system up with programs from a fresh install. I know all about the alternate CD but it seems like it's all or nothing. Either you go with the alternate install and do a lot of work or you get all the programs they think you should have.

I was cool with evolution being installed. I never used it. But now they have all these applications in 10.04 that are integrated into Ubuntu and you can't really take them out. For example, empathy is integrated into your user name, along with a program called gwibber.

They took gimp out but installed pitivi. I don't get that at all...

The big thing was that when I provided honest feedback, I was pretty much told "If you don't like it, leave." which is a straight up tactless response.

Gimp in fedora isnt installed as Default , you have to install that from the repo. i have no idea why there bothering making Empathy when there is not a lot of developers on it, they could always Help Make Pidgin a Better Linux IM, Fedora uses Empathy by default but your not forced to use it. , but however Empathy is in the " teething " Process atm, same thing happened with Gaim/Pidgin , only thing im aware of that Empathy is better it uses the Telepathy Framework, where as Pidgin doesnt. still Empathy relies on libpurple in some way, however i think Ubuntu is in a Messy state, prolly why shuttleworth is leaving in March to let someone else clean it up. just remember with fedora there will be times you'll be pulling your hair out. But at least with Fedora you can take things out or add things in that you want or do not want. According to the op Ubuntu is making it harder to take things out without crippling the system.

According to the op Ubuntu is making it harder to take things out without crippling the system. thats true, however Fedora could make Boot Faster by default if they didnt have not needed Services turned on. ok i know you can disablle unwanted services but still if people dont need them turned on or have the hardware to switch these services on it shouldnt be on by default. but anyway yeah back on topic

Right. I'm cool with GIMP not being installed from the start. But to have Piviti installed by default and not GIMP? That's lunacy! More people edit photographs, even if they are simple edits than videos.

I don't mind that empathy is installed. What I object to is that it's molded into the Ubuntu framework. It makes it much harder to remove because it's now tied into your name in the upper right hand corner.

What I also dislike is the response I got when I tried to share my opinion. I knew people would disagree, I just didn't expect them to be so tactless. Kind of shattered that "community feel" they all love to talk about so much. It's a great community as long as your opinion is the same as theirs.

Piviti doesnt look that Nice, but yeah i dunno why they would do that an Trash Gimp when many more users used Gimp anyway. i dont think i'd like my Name used on a IM Client, im sure more Ubuntu people will Jump ship soon enough, its bout as Bad as what microsoft used to do with there tactics, i think the EU put there foot down with them, another thing i do not like is the fact Ubuntu now uses Yahoo Search by default..Ubuntu doing Deals with Microsoft an yahoo? makes you wonder, another Novel-Microsoft like Deal perhaps

i havent seen screenshots as that but i do not like it. least fedora doesnt do that , as i said above, i think you'll find a lot jumping ship

Possibly this should be laid at the Gnome door, rather than Ubuntu, You'll see from the attached screenshot that it's very similar in F12. Personally, I feel that Gimp and Open Office have become virtually ' industry standard ' for Linux, except for the specialist light weight distros such as Puppy, and I'd expect them to be in any distro. I was considering for serious use. Unless HD space is really at a premium my attitude to unwanted apps. would be to use Prefered applications and menu editing to ' lose ' them. It may not be so bad now, but I recall one case where removing an app. also willy nilly took out all dependencies, even those used by other apps.:eek:
