liveusb settings

i made a live-usb for fedora12 with 8GB flash-drive. I used flash in full. I my pc allows to boot with flash-drive. i used successfully but when i installed adobe reader/ adobe flash player, it disappeared after restart. In short any download not saved. any help?
further all settings made to firefox also disappears after restart. Any way to make settings permanent?
Even network settings also disappears after restart.

Sounds like a problem with the persistent overlay file. How large did you specify for the persistent overlay? It might be too large. Another thing that can cause persistent overlay to fail is if you rename the volume label of the flash partition after installing the liveusb. The overlay contains the volume name as a part of its own name so would also have to be renamed.

You have to install it when you build the liveusb iso file.

I tweaked the livecd-fedora-base-desktop.ks to add the following repos:
repo --name=adobe-linux-i386 --baseurl=http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/linux/i386/
repo --name=skype --baseurl=http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/fedora/updates/i586/
repo --name=chromium --baseurl=http://spot.fedorapeople.org/chromium/F12/

Next I added the reader to the %packages list in livecd-fedora-desktop.ks
%packages
AdobeReader_enu
...
...
Then rebuild the iso file.

Note, the chromium and skype repos are also shown just to illustrate the approach.

I too have been having a similar problem. I'm using a HP 4GB USB stick. I've not been able to get any upgrade or change to be persistent. I've tried making the persistent overlay maximum, 1 GB, and 2 GB but makes no difference. When I reboot, the system reverts to the original state.

Does this problem depend on the brand of USB flash drive?

Also, I noticed that I'm unable to update the kernel at all.

Also, I've tried playing with the latest version of ubunto for USB flash drives. ubuntu did not have this problem with the same USB 4 gb drive.

Yes, you do have to make (rebuild) the liveusb.

When a livecd/usb is created, all the installed packages are "cast-in-stone" in a readonly, compressed filesystem using the squashfs tools. Therefore, when you run a live usb, the O/S etc is read from this filesystem and actually run from memory. When you install a new package, it is available during your current session and lost upon reboot because is not written back to the squashfs. Only your user data is saved in the persistent partition.

Therefore you have to install any new packages during the build process.

I'm sorry for confusing you because you are probably using the GUI (wrapper) tool to build the liveusb. I use the command line tools (livecd-creator, livecd-iso-to-disk) and copy the desired "kickstart" (.ks) files to my own subdirectory to alter as per my requirements. Then I call the livecd-creator using my local copy of instead of the standard ones located in /usr/share/spin-kickstarts/custom .

You may be able to get away with simply editing these (as root). Be sure to back any file that you edit up first!

Also, I'm still using modified kickstart files from Fedora 9, so I don't guarantee your results!

i remade live usb with 3997MB (less than 4GB) as persistent overlay. Now it is working good. it retains setting and i downloaded & installed rpmfusion, adobe flashplayer, mp3 codec, openoffice.calc(spreadsheet), hplip (foe printer HP Deskjet 3745) I do not need word/adobe reader as there is abiword & evince.
Now i can edit word/excel documents and can print. can listen MP3 songs.

now my next question, can i change 3997MB overlay. Because on clicking properties of filesystem, it says only 355.5MB free space. Due to fear of using free space, i am not updating
