View Full Version : GNOME user feedback

So I just wanted to get a little feedback from GNOME users as to which apps you can't live without and which you can't live with. :D
So if you guys would list 5 apps that you just must have and 5 apps that you hate enough to remove on every install, I would appreciate it. :)
Feel free to also list 5 other items (that don't qualify as apps) that you need such as drivers, etc. ;)
Thanks.
Edit - Don't bother listing Nvidia or ATI drivers as those are a given.

GIMP
CinePaint
Inkscape
OOo (full install - all the goodies) Actually, come to think of it, maybe scratch the crippled fedora version of OOo in place of Oxygen Office.
HPLIP/Xsane (all the goodies)
And if I can have a few more ... Blender and Geany
Oh, yeah! And VLC, Xine and all the codecs/libs

Presumably you mean GNU things, rather than KDE things and general stuff like OO? GNU must-haves are Gnucash, GIMP, Gedit, Evince, Evolution, Gnome-Mplayer.
Other must-haves would be OpenOffice, Opera, Fontforge, Bluefish, Wine.
I don't have anything to remove, because I always do a custom installation, but an example of a program I hate would be Konqueror.

Presumably you mean GNU things...
I meant GTK+ apps for most part. Things which would go well with GNOME.
Though obviously I expect people will list apps like OO and mozilla apps, VLC like Dan listed, but definitely not looking for any KDE specific favorites like Konqueror. ;)
Then again I also expected a lot more people to have responded by now... :(
I'll put mine here, just for example
Must have
1. Geany
2. Devhelp
3. Agave
4. Inkscape
5. gconf-editor
Can't stand
1. Ekiga
2. Mono apps
3. "Iced Tea"
4. Most of the "system-config-" crowd
5. Useless services enabled by default.

Yes, on the system-config stuff, gedit, firefox
No on PulseAudio (screws up digital ham radio progs (gmfsk); at least make it easy to uninstall, open-office (even updates are about 200 M - puts me into FAP jail for 24 hours, so cannot install while connected to the net)...and yes, I agree with Wayne...forget Mono)

Bob

I know this is old...but, here you go:
Qalculate GTK. Simple, yet functional.
http://www.comfsm.fm/~dleeling/math/qalculate.html
Wine. The second best program ever.
http://www.winehq.org
Koffice. Office suite jam packed with goodies.
http://koffice.org
Age of Empires III (in Wine, of course!)
Wireshark.
And, if I may, one more:
