think i'll wait untill its been fully tested before playing with it... i have this skill of breaking things easily enough as it is, without it being unstable anyway.

Hope that you will be good enough soon to test beta realises. After some time ... Don't worry.
:)

After I have reformated my 100gb partition from ntfs to ext3 I will begin to test new beta realises. I am pretty sure.

At the moment I have 10gb WinXP, 10gb Fedora and 100gb ntfs data partition. I use cd-rw to transport music from the linux partition to ntfs partition (I download quite heavily and the linux partition is quite small). I just have to back up 55gb data on the ntfs partition to reformat it, but this needs some time and good will. But after that I think I will be one of those good people testing betas (as much as my time enables it). Hm, actually it needs one more partition or what? How big it should be? I don't want to make it very big - as small as possible.

I just finished an ICT A Level and am now at the University of Nottingham, but thats besides the point.

Your experience level with Linux doesn't seem too high at the moment, give it a few months before delving into testing. Fedora Core 3 full release will be upon us soon enough. ;)

Seriously. I burned the cds last night, this morning I log into my brand new FC3T2 and the first headline I see is, "FC3T3 is out." Ok, I'll drink the koolaid again.

damn I still havent even perfected my fc3t2 setup..I'll just wait this time around, I mainly even bothered to upgrade from fc2 for certain bug fixes (Kudzu, and some improved automounting behavior.)

Same happened to me... I had just installed FC3t2 then I do a yum update and B00M... 1000+ packages...

This thing went on for about 4 hours.... (stupid openoffice.org package took like 1 hour to download).

it's not, ive been playing on and off with it for a few months but now i have a practical use for it as my home server but my knowledge is up to enough to survive the basics... really need to get a dual boot going on my pc to really start playing.

I cheat at the moment and use webmin for everything and dont bother with installing all the graphical stuff for my server.

Subject line says it all - FC3T3 i386 DVD ISO is 2.3GB, but FC3T2's equivalent was 4.4GB - why the 2.1GB difference? Is it missing source code or something else important?

SRPMS have been removed from the DVD to save space.

Fair enough, so why isn't there a source DVD ISO then? There's 4 source CD ISOs, but no source DVD ISO :( I'm disappointed that they've a) gots loads of space on the binary DVD ISO (2GB free !) and b) there's no source DVD ISO. Seems like a poor compromise to me, especially since single layer DVD writers (30 pounds!) and single layer DVD media (I just bought DVD+RW media for 68 pence a disc) are very cheap now - let's have two DVD ISOs please if we must split them. I think it'll be a mistake not to do this for FC3 final.

it doesnt look as cool as FC3T2 did
not as much new cool stuff...

That's because the development is slowing down (http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/) and the focus is on bug fixes. It's basically all there, now it has to be made stable.

Have at it, beta testers! Fix those bugs.

Has anyone come across a Bittorrent source of Fedora ISOs (either for the latest test version or the final from previous versions) where you don't have to download all 4 ISOs? I only need or want the first two (in fact I wish they has a 1 CD install desktop option), and it seems like a waste of bandwidth if there are others like me who end up downloading the entire 4 CD set when they only need part of it.

So is FC3 going to include the system tools gnome 2.8 has, or the regular old redhat system tools, like the Network, Clock, and User configs? I saw it here (http://www.gnome.org/start/2.8/notes/rnwhatsnew.html#rnsysadmin-systemtools). Maybe it has both. Anyone know?

I'm using FC3 test 2 right now -- it uses 2.7 stuff so I assume that the final will contain the stable 2.8

haven't really had a chance to test this yet but a few things I noticed...

1)
tried installing from dvd - kept getting media errors even tho media check completed ok (could be hardware issue) - md5 checked out on image

2)
installed to vmware (via iso image) with >hd size packages selected (around 4gb) - anaconda crashed with uncaught exception - (virtual) system would not boot unless specifically told to use cd (image) which suggests some kind of boot record was written to the (virtual) hd

3)
installed to vmware allowing anaconda to autosize the (virtual 4gb) hd - partitioned as lvm (not used that before) - install went okay but on rebooting couldn't located lvm volumes ... resulting in kernel panic.

I noticed that too over the weekend.

I've been pretty religious about doing a "yum update" since I did the fresh install of my laptop a few months ago (I started with FC2 T1 at the time).

Here's my question: By doing a yum update, am I getting all the latest tools/binaries as others are doing a fresh install of FC3-T3?

Test 3 seems ok to me - a few crashes in Evolution and Epiphany. The main problem is that I can't add programs from the CDs using the Add/Remove Programs app - it just won't "see" the CDs, even though I can mount and browse the manually.

I wouldn't bother trying to upgrade from FC 2 to 3. It is just safer and a smoother install if you wipe the FC2 partition and install FC3 fresh -- trust me on this. I would save all your data and your home folder on backup CD's or a spare drive or partition. That is what I did since my last upgrade from FC1 to FC2 caused problems. Also, keep in mind that third party applications probably haven't all been built yet for FC3. So doing a yum update ain't going to do too much for third party apps!
