This spin appears to run normally in Virtualbox and the panel and system tray appear as expected.
However, when I boot the CD for real on my mahine the system tray does not appear in the panel (containing clock etc. )
When I look at adding a system tray it is not possible to add any of the components eg.digital clock- as there is no check box available.

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Things like the clock are no systray objects, they are normal LXPanel plugins that reside outside the tray. The tray only holds the icons of other applications such as the nm-applet or parcellite.

One thing I have noted is that the software updater gpk-update-viewer does not show an icon while seaching for updates. Instead, there only is a blank space in the tray. But I guess this is not your problem, right?

To be honest I don't understand your problem. Maybe a screenshot would be help. What checkbox are you referring to? The checkbox in the "Panel Preferences -> Panel applets" dialog is only for defining the plugin that should be expanded to cover all free space (usually the task list). To add a new plugin you need to use the "Add" button on the top right. You can only have one systray, the other plugins may appear in a panel more than once.
