Yesterday a chap came in and talked about how he like "Linux XP", which I had never heard of. Today I decided to try it but read the wikipedia listing for it first. Turned out its from Russia and apparently is almost exactly like Fedora except it has a Windows look and feel to it - that made me laugh and think, why not try Russian Linux today! (humour, no bad meant at all) - so, off i go for the download!

Troy, I've edited the title, and request that you edit your post as well. Russia is no longer Communist, and while there's nothing wrong with mentioning that it's from Russia, as you know, we try to leave politics behind when we're here.

Wasn't Linux called Communist? ;)

I've heard of Linux XP before. Thought it was interesting, but not interesting enough to try it.

I don't know about that. As i recall Russia had enough of dealing with a certain big home pc operating company and decided to drop sending the company money regularly for basic computing needs. In turn one would expect that such a thing lead to the need for a system migration that was easy for people. Apparently some thought it would be good to9 make a Fedora system with a look and feel of XP along with a name that would give the user an idea as to where to turn to make migration easy. Such a condition over there may well keep the name going for some time.

Personally, I want my Linux to be as different from "The Other OS"™®© as possible.... That's just me, screw the "community". :D

Will it run on an AMD Intel processor ?

I hear you, sort of. I have got pretty adapted to the face of Gnome - and like KDE and my favourite little pet puppy as well. On the other hand, I can get around now on XP too so what they hey, that's fine as well (where stuff is is not as important to me as other rather more important issues).

My own self aside, here at the computer repair shop we are breathing life into old boxes by packing them up with Linux systems - a variety of systems at that. A worthless box that no one want because it only runs windurs 98 becomes a snappy little box fired up with many linux systems after a little memory is tossed at it - people are buying them right up between $125 and $175 per box, and dang happy to have them. I plan to have Linux XP as just another show-off piece fo4r yet another old box - I'll bet you it works out great!

Are you sure it isn't Windows Pirated Edition (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Windows_XP_Pirate_Edition) in disguise? :D

If you're looking for a Communist OS then go for Red Flag Linux (http://www.redflag-linux.com/en/) :D

I don't think this is a bad thing, if it gets more people using Linux, even if it's Windows-like, they might eventually move to real Linux.

What about Linspire, formally Lindows?

The whole reason why I joined the GNU/Linux train was because it didn't "look and feel" like a propiertary OS that screws me over with data loss and the black screen of death...and I can actually modfiy it. I'm posting from an XP machine here at school, and it already brings back bad memories of viruses, terrible security, and poor functionality...I have an idea, let's make a "Linux Vista"! Perhaps people will start using Linux if they are reminded with the crap that is M$ Vista. I'm sure that will win them over -__-
In all honesty, these projects aren't doing anything to help GNU/Linux. Making people think that Linux is a replacement, or giving any other false ideas to newbies is bad. The people who will stick with Linux will do it because they are truly interested, not because it "looks and feels" like M$ except with actual security and functionality.

We got the same inquiry over at Linux.com, I wonder if someone is trying to push it. Seems it is Russian, based on Fedora (Although I thought Debian at first). And looks like the distro I wiped off my laptop (with extreme prejudice). Heh.
