F12 Rocks, But Where Are The Good Apps?

I've been using F12 since early alpha and I love it. Moving back to linux after being stuck in M$ land for a few years was great! Since I used to administer a server with 50+ serial terminals connected to it, going back to the shell has actually been fun. BUT!!! Why did I have to install wine so I could run the best free CD ripper, audio file tagger, and CD/DVD burner available? Oh well, at least i convinced myself that Exaile is almost as good as Winamp and didn't install that, too. :p

If anybody has used Exact Audio Copy, mp3tag, or Imgburn and knows of equally good free linux replacements, I'd love to hear about them.

i assume " the best cd ripper is winamp" ..Winamp is NOT FREE Open Source client,

The best cd ripper is Exact Audio Copy, which is donation ware. Winamp is a nice player, and they did try to OS it once, but that effort was pretty much a disaster.

I don't know about stand alone tagging software, but check out grip for ripping cds and k3b for burning. I just do my tagging in rhythmbox and it works for me.

Actually K3b will rip cds too.

There are several tagging apps but they are all a bit clunky. Kid3 works for me as I use KDE. It is quite powerful but it isn't perfect.

I use k3b for CD ripping and CD/VCD/DVD burning - just be sure to install k3b-extras-nonfree from RPM Fusion first to enable extra codecs first though!

I like Rhythmbox as my audio player, although I know many people like Banshee or Amarok. For audio tagging, easytag does the job quite well for me. It handles multiple formats and can scan filenames to write tags, which I find an extremely powerful feature.

Replacement for Winamp ? You might want to try VLC media player. Unless you've already found something else... I used Winamp for a while when I was using Windows, but it didn't do well on my laptop when it had Win2k so I just used RealPlayer most of the time.

There is a realplayer rpm available for linux, also... you can get it from the realplayer website.

Thanks CiaW, but I really like exaile for audio and smplayer/mplayer for videos. I haven't tried VLC in a long time, but I remember being very disappointed with it in Windows.

Yes, you must install RPM Fusion, both free and non-free - Fedora isn't much use without it.

Most Linux programs that's can be found from RPM Fusion, if not they can be found through Google but installing them can be a pain.

KID3 is great at editing mp3/ogg/etc. tags. It's quicker and performs its task more elegantly than mp3tag does. For Imgburn, K3b is probably your best bet. As others had previously mentioned.

You forgot to mention the livna repos. They and RPM Fusion combined give you all the non-free software you need. I'm got the ability play dvds. mp3s, avi's, broadcom wl b/g working, etc in about two minutes (including reboot for kernel wl update). You can even install windows fonts if I'm not mistaken (if you just HAVE to have them). I don't recommend hunting through Google for non-free stuff, it can become a hassle. There's rarely anything non-free that livna/rpm-fusion/flash-repo won't offer.
