I have a dell inspiron 1100 with the latest firmware and running F11 and when I try to open any movie and some games all I get are a bunch of crazy blocks all over the screen. I can surf the web just fine but I can't get any video that way either.

Welcome to the forum.
You will need to provide a little more info before someone can help.
What graphics card do you have? What format are the videos? Do you have flash installed (probably needed for the online video, eg, youtube)?

I found this from a dell manual
Video
Video type direct AGP integrated graphics
Host interface integrated direct AGP
Video controller Intel UMA integrated
Video memory 1 MB with Intel DVMT up to 32 MB (with
128 MB of system memory) or 64 MB (with
256 MB or more of system memory)
LCD interface SPWG-A
When I try to play any kind of wmv avi or mpeg file you can tell that the video is playing but it is all scrambled and you can hear the audio. I have tried several different media players VLC and Dragon player to name a couple.
I have the same problem with jpg if i open them with the gThumb image viewer.
All thumbnails for jpg and video files display correctly
I also have
Firefox 3.5.3 with
flash player 9.0
VLC plugin
Quicktime pulgin
Windows media player plugin
