hi, i got the 64 bit version of fedora 12 on a live-usb but it wont boot my hp elitebook 6930p (grub wont load; the pc goes directly to win-xp).
fedora 11 live-usb boots up fine on it.
i tested the fedora-12 usb on an older acer extensa 4620z and it boots fine.
did they do something different with the boot loader/ grub that makes it incompatible on some pc's ?
thx.

Is the usb flash drive formatted with fat32? Did you format it from within windows on the computer you are trying to boot from? (possible geometry incorrect issue as seen by your BIOS).

I just looked in my HP BIOS settings and HP calls the geometry setting "Translation Mode" and it's under IDE/SATA options. The default on mine was "Bit Shift" and when I changed it to "LBA Assisted" I was able to boot a fat32 drive that was formatted on another computer and wouldn't boot on the HP due to geometry problems.

ahci
ide
raid
and ahci is checked.
i mounted both usb's to fc-9 live cd (the fedora-11 usb disk label is referred to as disk-1):[fedora@localhost ~]$ mount

stuff that deals with the boot directory seems to be different; i may have imaged the wrong iso.
i made the fedora-12 usb using this method:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD/USBHowTo
Direct Copy
Starting with Fedora 12, .iso files can also be written directly to USB sticks using "dd" or similar tools. Please note this will overwrite any data on the targeted partition, and will also not create storage to support data persistence.
# dd if=Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso of=/dev/USBDEVICE
i made the original fedora-11 usb using the livecd-iso-to-disk command.

You may want to edit your link to the howto, and remove the extra colon at the end.
I have not created a live usb using this new dd method. It's possible that the BIOS of one computer might not know how to deal with an ISO9660 filesystem on a USB flash drive.
If I were you I would try reformatting it on the target computer and after making sure you can boot it to say, a windows dos prompt, then run the livecd-iso-to-disk script method.

i'm trying to boot fedora 12 from live-usb too...and i have grub2 as bootloader. From what i found at web i can't use loopback fedora, but i don't know what to write for fedora 12 in grub2 even if i extract the files on the usb. I had wrote this but it dosen't work:
menuentry "Fedora 12" {
linux /boot/iso/Fedora12/EFI/boot/vmlinuz0 root=/boot/iso/Fedora12/EFI/boot rootfstype=auto ro liveimg quiet rhgb
initrd /boot/iso/Fedora12/EFI/boot/initrd0.img
# loopback loop /boot/iso/Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso
# linux (loop)/EFI/boot/vmlinuz0 boot=EFI/boot iso-scan/filename=/boot/iso/Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso
# initrd (loop)/EFI/boot/initrd0.img
}

nope, i reformatted it as fat32 and ran livecd-iso-to-disk on it and it still wont boot up ?

i used the gui tool for creating live usb and was at least able to get a grub menu.
i am now getting this error rite after boot:
drhd: handling fault status reg f000674e
kernel panic - not syncing: dmar hardware is malfunctioning
edit: i had to add the boot flag iommu=soft and now i am able to get to the desktop.
but it is pretty slow so i will stick with fc-11 for now.
