With Fedora 12 just a few days from release it is time to begin the
naming process for the next Fedora release.

I think 'Fortuna' should win. It's concise, easy for English-speakers to pronounce, and extremely themable (Renaissance). It also sounds elegant. And if F13 turns out well, the association with a masterpiece will be great. The alliteration is unfortunate.
Browsing through the list, I saw many names like "Methodius", "Celestine", "Hammurabi", and "Maximus". I hope we don't choose the name of another historical figure again. Leonidas → Constantine → Maximus would be terrible.
I think 'Dryden', 'Lucky', and 'Sequoia' are also good. Any of these names would be better than 'Moonshine', with the possible exception of 'Crystal Lake'. Fedora Crystal Lake? I hope not.
As an aside, if I proposed 'Jesus', the link being someone influential to Christianity, would Legal be likely to pass it? It might be somewhat controversial, but it'd be hilarious.

Blasphemer! 'Moonshine' was the best name ever! :p

@arttorney ,
There is no "they". It is the community which votes for the names.

I still like Monterey, which gets us away from the ancient kings naming and into a wide range for the future. BTW, "Turkey" ...hmmm... "F13...what a Turkey!" Not good.

How about Fedoraforums. Logic--Constantine was a religious and political figure, and we, (quite wisely in my extremely biased opinion) are Draconian (another ruler) about preventing such disucssions.
I always suggest Scott, but it's always ignored. (That's a joke folks, I don't present it to the community, just here.)

I don't think turkey would be a good choice, given slang connotations of turkey

Where I come from, "Turkey" means "makes us feel fat and sleepy once per year."
Or is that the beer? :p

Fedora Constantine → Fedora Jacket (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jacket) (2005 films)
Fedora Jacket → Fedora Fedora (attire)
Or if the release date is pushed back, Fedora Hitch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitch_%28film%29) :D.

Well, look at it this way. How often do you type, "I'm having trouble with Leonidas." Firstly, some idiot--well, me probably--would preface it with, don't get him too mad, he'll kick ya into a well.
I couldn't even tell you what they called F10 without looking it up. I think the only Linux distro that uses the name a lot is Ubuntu. I mean, Arch had a version called core dump--could you see how much confusion that might have caused on their forums if people actually used the name?
As for non-Linux--well, I think only Windows and Mac make use of names. Always wonder if eventually there will be a Mac release called American Domestic Shorthair, or maybe Russian Blue.
So, I think the naming is fun, and good for aggravating people, but is quickly forgotten till the next time. :)

well the odds are always worse then the evens anyway, so it figures the name would suck as well. besides being '13' doesn't bode well....

Gregory M. Constantine and Juan J. Manfredi are both professors of the Department of Mathematics of the Pittsburgh University
What the hell of a link is this??????!!!
So, if my uncle was Costantino, why don't we name the next release "Mattia"....??? :(
The only one that sounds good to me is "Goddard".

Perhaps I'm an undereducated lout, but I wouldn't know how to properly pronounce Manfredi. "man fray dee", "mon freddie" (like Freddie Mercury), "mon fray die"?
On the plus side, if they go with 'Botany,' that would open up all sorts of possibilities for 14:
Extragalactic astronomy
Geomorphology
Kenisiology
Myrmecology
Or, my favorite:
Non-Euclidean geometry
Interestingly, if I google that name (Manfredi) i get all sorts of hits of companies using that name (none of which I've heard of). Seems a possible trademark collision - which is odd considering how many suggestions were quashed for the same reason.

actually i think there are no need for second name like other were doing, just use fedora 13 or f13 to make it shorter..FEDORA is FEDORA,no need second name to make it better because it was the best.

It's a "call sign" rather than a second name.

Honestly the above comments about it not really mattering are right. Nobody remembers the codenames after a given version hits EOL.
Giving a codename to a given version doesn't hurt anything.
On the other hand, picking stupid names doesn't help anything. :p

what a bad name though
Goddard is not religious, it's German and means "Hard Spear", probably coming from
a long ago family of soldiers or guards since surnames frequently got their origins in the vocation of the holder. Since Robert H. Goddard certainly wasn't very religious I just don't see any religious connection.
Another interpretation is that Goddard came from "Good Brave"
http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/goddard-family-crest.htm
Anyway, it was good enough to name the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center after him!

I expect some will love it and some will hate it!, personally i wouldnt use a name other than version Num (13) which is what will get used as with all releases so far.

It is also the name of Jimmy Neutron's (cartoon character)robotic dog.:D
Quite from Wikipedia...
"Goddard: Jimmy's trusty robotic dog. Considering he's made of sprockets, circuits and widgets Goddard makes one great man's best friend. Plus, unlike his real-life canine cousins, Goddard can transform into a whole slew of useful tools, vehicles and other gadgets for Jimmy—he's like a high-tech, barking toolbox on four legs. Goddard's still got a few kinks to work out, but otherwise, this digital dog is the perfect (cyber) canine companion."
Pretty apt for a Linux distro..

For those that don't like Goddard, there is potential for some fun to be had with the next name:
(Liza) Goddard is a TV panel game captain (Give us a Clue) and so is...
(Ian) Hislop
(Paul) Merton
(Phil) Jupitus
