Hi everyone, just getting started in the linux world, and love FC2 so far. One problem though is that I can't seem to get any sound in Gnome.

In System Settings->Sound Card Detection, I hear audio from the speakers when I play the test sound. However, I hear no system event sounds, and I can't hear any audio from my CD rom drive.

In Preferences->Sound I've enabled the sound server startup and sounds for events. When I try to play one of the system events, I hear nothing.

My sound card is an SB Live! (correctly detected)

Any ideas what's wrong?

Thanks!
-Brian

Ok, a little bit more information. After searching around on the net for sound problems, I stumbled upon alsamixer. I unmuted everything and turned up the output volume of just about everything to 50% so I'd be sure I wasn't missing anything.

Now, CD audio works fine. :D

But I still have an odd problem. When I choose to log off and get the "Log off", "Reboot", "Shutdown" choices, I get sound when I click on the buttons and the checkbox, plus the shutdown sound plays.

However, when in Gnome, no normal event sounds are played. Plus, when I go to Sound Preferences, I can't play the sounds through the interface.

When I try and open the sound files through Nautilus in the Sound Recorder, most of them don't play - the Sound Recorder says that their length is 0 seconds. Some of them DO play however, as they should.

Any ideas as to what is going on here?

try unmuting the little speaker in the bottom right corner (right click, and go to unmute) :]

hope that helps,
ben

That speaker is unmuted... the problem still stands that some of the sound files when opened come up as having a length of zero and not playing...

Have you tried to download the updated libgnome (http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/2/i386/libgnome-2.6.0-3.i386.rpm) rpm?

I had the same exact problem... The update fixed it all.
