I used redhat's up2date software unsuccessfully and he amount of free HD space was redduced considerably.
YUM worked fine, but the free space was reduced even further.
What needs to be deleted and how?
Further,
The Add/Remove applications software cannot find pakages ==> functions not.

Thank you.

Just to address the space issue.. I have a similar problem with my Tecra 8000 (tiny hard drive).. I have to select only a few packages at a time in up2date..
Also, drop to a terminal as root, and do
df -h
yum clean all
df -h
The 'df -h' before/after is only there to give you a report of the space available before, then after the cleaning, so you can see how much was cleared.. not needed for it to work, just to be nosy on how well its doing :)

That will clean the downloaded packages that have been updated.. It appears to me at least that yum isnt very good at cleaning up after itself.. I have recovered significant space on my small laptop hard drive by doing that.
