I had been using F11 on my Dell Inspiron 5160 and just last night, literally, I upgraded to F12 and everything went perfectly until I got the desktop. The symbol that the network manager usually give next to my name is gone and I cannot get an internet connect wired...or otherwise. I tried looking for it, but it was a fool's errand. Anyone know how to replace it or repair it if its just acting wonky?

Have you tried stopping and starting the network manger init processes to see the output? Is network manager running? Have you checked the log files for messages?

I looked through the process table and I didn't see network manager in there. I don't think I've ever had to do the other two options so I might need to be told. But in the meantime I can tinker.

If NM isn't running then "sudo /sbin/service NetworkManager restart" and see if it dumps any errors to the screen. If it doesn't start, doesn't show errors or simply doesn't start working, check logs (sudo grep NetworkManager /var/log/messages) for errors.

Good:
sudo /sbin/service NetworkManager restart
Stopping NetworkManager daemon [Failed]
Setting network parameters [ OK ]
Starting Networkmanager daemon [ OK ]
Bad:
sudo grep NetworkManager /var/log/messages had more flaws than a home made diamond. The first <warn> is
<warn> nm_signalhandler(): Caught snal 15, shutting down normally.
<info> (eth0): now unmanaged
<info> (eth0): device state change: 8 -> 1 (reason 36)
<info> (eth0): deactivating device (reason 36)
<info> eoth0 canceld DHCP transaction, dhcp client pid 11457
<warn> check_one_route(): (eith0) error -34 returned from rtnl_route_del(): Success#12
Then it cleans up take down device and even has a succesfull exit.
<warn> nm_generic_loopback(): eroor -17 returned from rtnl_addr_add(): #012success12
<info> (eht0): new Ethernet Device (driver: "b44")
<info> (eth0) exported as /org/freedesktop/hal/devices/net_00_11_43_63_18_2a
<info> Trying to start the supplicant...
<info> Trying to start the system daemon
nm-system-settings: Loaded plugin for ifcfg-rh (c) 2007 - 2008 Red Hat, Inc. To report bugs please use the Network Manager maling list.
Theres more, enough to fill the Old Testament.
If I didn't know any better I'd think the B44 was my broadcom wifi that F11 didn't even know existed.

So you don't get the status area icon?

I was having this problem for about a week. On a reboot it would show up. If I tried to connect and failed it just dies. Restarting NM wouldn't do any thing. A full reboot would bring it back. An update a few days ago fixed it again. My advice is run an upgrade and then do a full reboot and see what you get.

Nope no icon. I didn't even notice it until I tried to do an update and YUM couldn't connect. At first I thought it was a local problem, until neither Firefox nor Konqueror could connect then I noticed the missing icon.
Hmm oddly the computer doesn't shutdown. If I chose restart or shutdown from system GDM simply logs out. At the sign-in screen shutdown and restart do nothing. The only way I can turn off the computer is to hold down the power button. I am not sure if that is really all that different from chosing shutdown/restart...but it could be.
NetworkManager is dead but pid file exists
Sounds so bad...

I had to go into > System > Administration > Network Configuration and make sure that my "ETH0" was active...default was inactive as well as "Activate device when computer starts" as well as "Allow all users to enable and disable the device"
See attached Screenshot-3. :)
Hope this helps. ;)
