Is there any way to get those extra keyboard buttons to work (i.e. volume controls)?

What's the model of the keyboard?

Note: I am assuming you are using gnome.

1) Go to Prefernces > Keyboard and click the Layouts tab and choose your keyboard model. If you specific model is not listed, you can try a similar model.
2) G to Preferences > Key Board Shorcuts and find which option you want to associate with a key and click it. Then just hit the key you want to assign to that function.

I had the same question a while back...
I'm curious about one thing.

I went to preferences, keyboard shortcuts, and mapped all the keys that I want to use. Volume works great, but I do not know how to make the prev/next and play-pause/stop buttons interact with XMMS. Right now they show a box (throught Gnome) with a graphic and text that corresponds to the function of the button but they do not control XMMS. Do I need a plugin? or is there more to do?

I would like to know how to do that also. The problem is that xmms in not integrated into gnome. Kde allows you to do this easily, so I am sure there is a way. I think foolish or someother admos made a tutorial about custom key bindings. The only thig to figure out is which commands control xmms.
