I am using the provided ALSA drivers, and the output is very poor quality sound.

I also use a SBLive value sound card and have no problems with it. What version of ALSA are you using?

I have no problems with sound quality(SBLive value).

It looks like version 1.03a.

And it's not that the sound is bad, it was just better on Windows.

You could fire up alsamixer on a command prompt and play around with the bass, treble, surround and other settings.... to see if it improves your sound quality.
You could also upgrade your ALSA driver to 1.0.6a if you're using a 2.4.x kernel.... though I doubt it will improve your SBLive performance as I don't recall any significant improvements being implemented on the SBLive driver in the versions that are newer than what you currently use.

I had a similar problem with sb live emu10ki. I disabled the built-in sound in bios, and all the hissing, squeeling, went away, and even my cheapie speakers work great.
Just a thought.

And Owakroeger, can you give me some more information on how to do that...sorry, I'm a Linux n00b!

I think I fixed it using the GNOME ALSA Mixer...not entirely positive just yet.
...nope still static.

Go to a command prompt (click the TV in your gnome panel) and type in alsamixer From there you can edit your sound settings, just adjust it to your playing prefrences. Use the arrow keys and mess around. Best way to fix it, mess around till it works.

I'm sorry I haven't been back to this.... the old body is betraying me.
If you haven't received an answer for how to disable the built in sound , when you first boot up, there will be a message "hit DELETE to enter setup". Do that, and scroll till you find the section dealing with periferals and such. Each manufacture is a bit different, so I can't say exactly where you'll find it. Scroll around till you do, and disable it. when you get the prompt to write changes to CMOS and exit, say "Y" and reboot.
That fixed my sound problem.
