I am brand new to Linux and brand new to Fedora Core 2. I have installed on a PIII running 733 with 384 RAM with 2 HDD. My display is an old Apple Multiple Scan 17 inch display which is hooked up to the PC via an adaptor. It works fine to display Windows XP (which is what I have overwritten with Linux) both on the target PC and on a separate laptop. It also works fine with a PowerPC.

Anyway, I installed from the Fedora Core 2 Bible CD-ROM sets, and everything went fine (no errors, etc.) except that Anaconda could not detect my monitor. So I selected the Generic CRT option at 1024x768 with 50-70 Hz horizontal refresh and the default vertical resolution (on the Mac, the settings are 1024x763, 75Hz).

The rest of the installation goes fine. But when I reboot, it runs through all of the mounting (everything comes up "Clean"), and then the monitor goes black. It looks like it is trying to switch to a graphical display, but it never gets there. Instead, I hear a high-pitched whine and then the power goes off on the monitor (as if Power Save kicks in).

I can't CTRL+ALT+DEL. I have to power down. I went through a reinstall and selected an Unprobed monitor, skipped the warning and proceeded with the update. But I get the same result.

Apple is not an option for selecting the Monitor. And it works fine in every other way and with other Operating Systems. I would rather not purchase another monitor (I just want to get it set up so I can run it as a web, file, dB server in order to get familiar with the OS).

Can anyone help with this? Many thanks!

The thing doesn't try to go to graphical about 5 times and then quit with an error? If that was the case I would suspect the video driver. What is your video card by the way? Sounds like you're getting no video.

If you have a working network you should be able to get a text login already with ssh. Any decent Linux should have it, or you can get PuTTY for Windows (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/). You sure would learn Linux commands quickly!
