Hi,

To some of you this what i'm just going to ask must be obvious, tough to many this questions remains, special from the ones that come from win32...so your opinion please.

1st - Win32 use defrager to increase HDD performance, Gnu Linux don't use it...don't need it?

2nd - Win32 use anti-virus.....why Linux don't use it or need it?

AFAIK win32 is the most attacked system (because most of the people use it) so it have a lot of more virus to hurt the system then gnu Linux, tough gnu also have anti-virus...but no one seems to use one or to care about it......

AFAIK Gnu Linux defrag itself automatically (systemfile), so no need to defrag manually.

And at last (please point proggies if any) any Power Tweaker for Fedora (Gnu Linux).

So opinions on the subject.
Thanks
Sniff.

ext is a more "inteligent" filesystem, so it has a better management of files through nodes than fat.

Linux doesn't relly need anti-virus software because there are no *wild* viruses that attack Linux systems. There are security risks with Linux just like any other sysetem so we are not completely in the clear. I think the main reason that there are drastictly fewer viruses is that Linus was designed from the beginning to be a multi-user platform so it is more secure natively. We can still pass viruses to Windows users, so some people who have a server run anti-virus software.

Linux doesn't need defrag, and it doesn't need anti-virus. Other things that are different about linux:

- Choice (don't like gnome?, you can use something else)
- No ads in software asking if you want to upgrade to the 'gold' version
- Doesn't use proprietary file formats

It doesn't have by default, but it can, there is the possibility. Therea are more than enough shareware or commercial software for Linux. (Ok, often enough there are alternatives). And you can choose to use proprietary formats ( OO.o can work with doc -files as an example)

In most cases you don't need anti virus. There are very few, if any viruses that can harm a Fedora system. However, it is important to stop viruses from spreading, even though they can't harm your system. Viruses can do a lot of damage to other operating systems, especially Microsoft Windows ® systems. There are anti-virus solutions that will find and remove viruses that can harm users of Windows. ® If you're in a dual boot system, run a file or email server or just share files with windows users, install anti virus.

There are several anti-virus solutions available for Fedora, this will show you have to install one of them, ClamAV.

1. Read www.fedorafaq.org/#installsoftware and get the yum.conf as explained there.

2. Install ClamAV:

yum install clamav

3. Do a system wide scan for viruses:

clamscan -r /

Another difference is no insane integration of web browser into the Kernel of an OS allowing for the complete destruction of your system based on a compromised browser "feature" as is the case with XP. [From what I have read this is only going to get worse with Longhorn since they are planning to effectively make IE the OS itself, by integrating it with absolutely everything.]

Not on my machine it won't. ;)

Hehe, can you imagine the virus bombs Longhorn will have? It's so sad what is going to happen to longhorn...Yet they actually expect people to pay for it with REAL money. How can they say with a straight face that "piracy" is wrong when they obsses in making total freaking crap products?

Yeah, maybe they should call it foghorn as a warning to stay away from it. :D

It's as if they don't even care, they are already going to destroy first gen Longhorn systems when they try to paste winfs on top of the existing NTFS system, now they want to make it the IE os as well....
