I should have forgotten about F11 after the issues I had trying to install it on my laptop; but Nooooo, I have a nice new computer (AMD phenom, triple core, 2gb RAM, Nvidia graphics, 250gb hard drive for under $400!) and CentOS 5.3 installed on it very nicely, thank you.
But CentOS or the Nvidia card wasn't happy with my old (really old, but still good!) SVGA monitor that is capable of 1024x768 resolution; but it degraded down to 800x600 resolution - yuck. I found a great deal (hot buy) on Costco.com for an Acer 19" 1440x900 monitor so I took the plunge and now I have a nice setup that I thought F11 would like.
I decided to install it from the DVD I got back in May, and that part went ok except that it installed all the default stuff even though I un-selected several things and it installed them anyway. Then of course I had to get updates; and I got the can't find repomd or repository data issue; which I solved for the fedora base repo by adding the IP to the /etc/hosts file. It then gave the same error for fedora-updates; and I commented the mirror list and changed the https to an http -- still had the same error. Then I had the bright idea to boot to my F7 laptop and put the mirror url in a browser, it didn't lead to a place that had a repodata file. So I tried baseurl and that re-directed to a totally different url (ftp://fedora.bu.edu and I clicked thru to /updates/11/i386/ where there was a repodata file -- so I commented both lines in the fedora-updates.repo file and added the above url and voila! yum was happy! I updated yum, installed yum-presto and yum-utils and yumex and then updates.
Life was good for a few moments in F11-land. Then I fired up Firefox, couldn't get online still. (by now I'd disabled SELinux because it was annoying me...) Since yum obviously connected to the internet to get my updates, I installed both Seamonkey and Dillo -- the only one that got me online was Dillo. I went to the Opera website, and it wouldn't download Opera.
I figured I'd take a look at the logs; and since I'd created a 50gb partition to use for sharing files /data between CentOS and Fedora I mounted that volume (as my non-root user); but it wouldn't let me save a gedit file there. argh! I logged on as my root-alias user, it wouldn't even mount the drive. (I know, I probably need to put it into fstab....CentOS won't mount it either cuz I haven't put it in the fstab file... )
While looking at the logs, I noticed it was starting bluetooth services, which I don't use; so I tried to stop and/or disable that service, didn't work. Same with sendmail. I saw nothing in the logs that told me why on earth I couldn't get Firefox to pull up a page except fedoraproject.org; maybe because that IP was in host file? No google, no fedora forum, but it would pull up the 192.168.0.1 page which told me my dsl connection was connected.
I'm not even looking for help at this point -- my main reason for wanting to install F11 was to maybe play with some graphics things; and get some newer software to play with that isn't available in CentOS.
So that's my rant... I may try to figure out the internet thing in a few days or weeks; for now I'm back with what works.
