I've seen it mentioned once or twice on this forum. Mostly in passing. I'd like to recommend Ubuntu to anyone interested in a Debian based distro. It comes with the 2.6 kernel and Gnome 2.8 as it's DE. While its only a beta release ( with the full release to come shortly ) this one has great pontential, in my opinion. A reader's comment from OSNews.com says it all for me....'Think of a rather up to date debian with some bleeding edge feature, and where alot of things you might not expect configured for you, configured already'.. Might even be the 'Knoppix' of the Gnome DE. Check it out. http://www.ubuntulinux.org/

I agree - I think Ubuntu is a distro to watch. Based on a quick test of the beta (or whatever they call the pre-release) on a scratch drive, I really like what I saw.

Ubuntu is a great distribution! About the same philosophy as Fedora, it's a much lighter distro with bleeding-edge applications. I tried it on an old PII/400 laptop with 256MB ram, and it works pleasantly! Despite being a 1 CD only download, it comes with kernel 2.6.8, Gnome 2.8.1, OOffice 1.1.2, Firefox 0.10PR, Evolution 2.0.1, ... And you can get everything else you may need that isn't on the CD (like Apache, NIS, ...) using Synaptic. It also fits in a 1.5 GB disk hole.

I have the iso downloaded but I don't have a cd to burn it on. It's probably by next distro to try since it seems like a interesting project.

I've got the horrible disease known as the distro fever. I've tried mandrake, fedora and gentoo and I still want to take a go at slack, ubuntu, vida, debian and so on.

Well....this might sound like a dumb reason to not like a distro, but I don't like the name.

Unbutu... Ubnut... Ubuntu (:o) is a nice distro for a typical desktop user - it has an office package, a browser and an email/schedule application. It is also a nice base to build upon, because everything else one may need is easy to download using Synaptic. I installed it on a box in a network as a NIS client and it was suprisingly easy - just looked for NIS on Synaptic, downloaded it in a few seconds, followed some instructions and I had a brand-new network station. As long as one has a broadband connection to the Internet, it rolls...

Still the setup program isn't as bullet-proof as Anaconda - after installing on an old desktop machine, I got an "error 18" from Grub when loading the system for the first time, and it stalled. What may a Grub "error 18" be?...

The order cds will be through when the distro comes out of beta.

I heard that the cds can be expeted mid to late November. It takes time to make and ship out all those cds!

I've been running Ubuntu for a couple weeks now and I have fallen in love with this distro! It will probably become my main distro soon if the development rate keeps up! Simple, fast, and beautiful!

There's a live cd available that may be useful to try new hardware.
