View Full Version : Black Screen with the latest kernel

Hi to all,
After today's updates,I got the new 2.6.31-0.86.rc3.git5.fc12.i686 and the 2.6.31-0.86.rc3.git5.fc12.i686.PAE kernels.

After a re-boot into each one,I noticed the V.G.A=795 on my kernel parameters is fine, but when Plymouth starts,it falls back to 800X600 resolution and the Fedora symbol doesn't appear. When I get to the K.D.M login screen and type in my password,I get the progress screen,BUT when it gets to the K.D.E Desktop,I just get a black screen with my mouse cursor:confused:.I tried to re-start X,but Alt+Ctrl+Backspace wouldn't work(I do have don't-zap in my xorg.conf).After a re-start, I can get into Windowmaker though, which I'm writing this new post on.

I can get to the K.D.E Desktop with the previous kernel(/2.6.31-0.81.rc3.git4.fc12.i686),but I would prefer the latest one.I do compile my D.R.M,the new nouveau D.R.M kernel modules,Mesa and the Nouveau driver from git,I did do a recompile on all them to see if that was the problem, but that doesn't seem to have an effect.I can re-compile again to see what happens.

I've looked into /var/log,and I saw something interesting in K.D.M log:

Hi to all,
Here is an update on my problem.I looked at the Nouveau Wliki-Insdtall-DRM page, and found at the bottom of the page that I needed to remove the vga=795 on my kernel parameters(sorry about that,I didn't see it).So I removed that line from the kernel in question in Menu.list and saved it.

When I rebooted into the latest kernel, the graphics were back at their defaults and the Fedora symbol showed up when Plymouth was running.

The sad news is that I still get a black screen on the K.D.E Desktop after I login via K.D.M:(

I still hope somebody can help me.

I see the same thing on one of my computers that is running F12 Alpha. This too is after yesterday's updates including kernel 2.6.31-0.86.rc3.git5.fc12.i686. In my case though, I can log in (Gnome) and the desktop background is intact. Once I start using the computer though, like pulling down a menu, the screen behind the menu turns black and stays that way. If I open a terminal and move it around the screen I can turn the whole desktop black, just as if I were using a paint program to fill the whole screen with a color. So, no solution from me but at least I can confirm that you are still sane :)

Hi glennzo,
I would like to thank you very much for the conformation.I actually thought I was the only one suffering from it,as I build my Nouveau drivers and the other code needed from git.

I hope the developers can resolve it soon.

what about with the rc4 kernel? do you guys still get the problem

glennzo

No idea Demz. Don't really care either since this is a "toy" box. If things don't work I'll just blow it all away and start over. But since you've asked I'll install rc4 and see what happens. Back in a minute.

Hi Demz,
I wasn't sure if the Fedora version of the rc4 kernel had been built yet and submitted to the mirrors.I do look on Koji regularly to see what packages are being built, but it seems fairly quiet the from last two times I looked.
I did a yum clean all and yum update this morning,I'll try again in an hour or so.

Hi Glennzo,
Have you just installed the rc4 kernel through yum and the desktop has the same symptoms as we have decribed?I just wanted to be sure.

Yes I have. Results are the same. Additionally, I removed vga=791 from my boto stanza and now I get a black screen with a blinking cursor instead of the log in. This is with the nv driver since I have an NVidia card. I've played with the nouveau driver and the vesa driver also. No difference. Here's some info. Don't know how significant it is.

I guess I'm done with this for a while. It's not that important to me. I've tried several things and nothing worked. Off to play with Debian for a while.

Oh Demz. You're such a positive influence when it comes to Fedora. I can't be bothered to try fixing the graphics issue with Fedora 12. I have around 10 OS's installed on this box so I'll just boot something else for a change. Haven't used Deb for a while. Works quite well.

well even though i havent seen fedora12 yet ( untill the official Alpha ) i'd have to say Ubuntu 9.10 kicksa$$ right now.

Agreed. Ubuntu 9.10 is a pleasure to use as is Debian Lenny 5.0.2. Matter of fact, I've just fired up Rhythmbox in Debian and am adding music folders. Rhythmbox actually installed codecs for me. No messing around with gstreamer-plugins-good/bad/ugly and all that other stuff. So much easier. But this is also why we use Fedora. We love cutting edge Linux and the challenges that come along with it. Certainly not boring.

Hi guys,
I'm sorry for that late reply,I've been busy compiling.
I can also confirm that after the latest updates earlier on today,I'm still getting the same problem with the latest rc4 kernel.

anyone filed the Bug.. cause its actually a X problem, not a kernel issue

Hi Demz,
I don't anyone has filed a bug,but I do have a Bugzilla account with Redhat,so I guess I could post one on there.
To be honest,I wasn't sure which one of the packages was at fault.Since they switched on the K.M.S support for Nouveau as default in the last two kernels,I thought that might have been the problem, since I use the experimental code from git.
Xorg has been released to version 1.6.3 and we use the latest version very kindly packaged from the svn repository.Hopefully I'll be able to update my version of Xorg to the latest one,(also so it might fix my little problems I'm having elsewhere).

umm no. Xorg is still at 7.4 for F12 not 1.6.3. F12 uses a pre X-Server 1.7. the problem your experiencing is an X problem. i would suggest looking it up in redhat bugzilla before making your problem in bugzilla.

X-Server 1.6.3 should go into F11? not F12

to findout what X version your using do this rpm -Xorg

or

rpm --Xorg

Hi Demz,
Sorry about that,I did know it was from the svn repository anyway. Those two konsole commands gave an unknown option.I have got the Xorg version using yumex, and have filed a bug report with four attached files with it to Bugzilla.

i do know X-Server in F12 is 1.6.99.x ..Xorg is still at 7.4 in F12 as far as i know an i dont think i seen any other problems such as this reported on the test list .. maybe you need to install a updated rawhide an wipe the old one?

your the one using Fedora, you look up these commands yourself

Hi Demz,
I think the only way to get the latest version of rwahide at the moment is throught yum until the first Alpha gets released,(which I hope will be very soon).
I could re-install Fedora 11 and do a pre-upgrade on top of it,(which I have done with this install),but I don't fancy doing that since the Rawhide Alpha should be out very soon.
