Ever thought of making a NEWBIE only section for those just starting out with linux...this way they dont have to wade thru all the higher level posts (my scsi wont... sata drive....)

Just a suggestion

Hey AwPhuch,

That is a bad idea if you ask me cause if you don't read the ENTIRE advanced post one will never
get to that level of knowledge.

Just search with the right keywords, read, read then read some more. Then finally
try it out, get more errors. Then read again, and in the end you will get it right.

This is a community, no need to separate the new users in a corner.

I think the installation help forum can be seen as something alike a newbie forum. We don't separate, but if you see most of the such threads can be found there.

Well said, we are all here to learn and gather help from one another. Technically everyone is a newbie in some way when he/she is in doubt and uncertain of something and has to ask another for aid and advice. :)

I dont see the point in a noob section, and i think it could hurt the fourms more than help it since some users may avoid the noobs since they ask more "anoying questions" but i think it works the way it is. and in some way or another we are all noob, im a great programer and fairly good with linux (after coming here for a while) but im a noob with sh (shell scripts)

Yeah, there really is no need. No question is a dumb question. Each forum is meant for a certain general area. Some of the areas, such as programming, might be a bit more advanced. But just like there isn't an expert forum, there shouldn't be a newbie forum either. The very nature of these forums is to provide you with the help you need, whether it be in an advanced area or not.

Also, one invaluable thing to remember too is that if you are having a problem, you're not the first. Chances are someone else has had the same problem, and if you use the search feature with the right keywords, you can see what suggestions others made to correct it. I haven't had the need to ask a single question on these forums yet because of that very reason.

Actually, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. ;)

I second to that.

Sorry, but there is one more dumb question:
"Where do you find the setup.exe in my Linux 9.1" :D

I like it seperated into categories of problems the way it is.

The starter of the thread really should give an idea of their experience level, though. And it's not bad to be new to something! We like new users! :)

But "noob" can be irritating internet slang. So I can see where they're coming from.

Now that would be me. Please dont' be offended, nothing personal.

I really despise leet-speak, and I will strike down on it when I catch it. It clearly states in the posting guidelines that you should not use leet-speak, so please, for the sake of my sanity as well as the readability of the forum, don't use any of the word they teach you over at Quakenet. That includes but is not limited to "noob", "woot" and "leet".

As for a Newbie only section, I think it's a horrible idea. It's very common that newbies who make it over the first cliff want to help others and that is a very good thing. Such users tend to want to create their own resources, their own fora and their own methods instead of slowly, by contributing and learning at the same time, getting involved in existing projects. I know this because I did this myself about some years ago.

(I was the guy shouting about how mixing repositories never caused me any trouble and as so it was safe).

The only problem about newbies telling newbies how to do stuff is basicly that they're all newbies. New users have a tendency to think that "Works for me" is good enough. It is not. "Works for me" is only slightly better than "Doesn't work at all". "Works for me" means that the thousands of factors playing in to make up a computer system worked out for you and your computer at the present time. If one of these thousands of factors change, it may not work, or not work as expected.

I fear that a newbie only forum, without more experienced users helping in, will be a forum filled with "Works for me" and "I haven't experienced any trouble yet" solutions. The result of this is breakage and trouble. Believe me, I've done my share of "Works for me" and "No trouble yet..". There are a lot of factors playing in when dealing with an operating system. There's a lot of issues that you won't see untill things go terribly wrong. The more experienced users know more of this than the newbies.

The bottom line is, newbies should help each other, and most newbies give great advice. But at the same time it's very important that the more experienced users help in. This way the newbies will learn how to do things the "right" way, and they can pass these methods on.

What can I say foolish? Other than your dead sexy, your the man. You said everything that I hadn't the time to type.
