View Full Version : Blank Screen on Live CD Boot

I am trying to install Fedora 11 x86_64 (with KDE) off the Live CD. I have downloaded and successfully burned the iso to a CD.
At this point I have not even tried to install it yet, I am still trying to boot from the Live CD.

When I try to boot to the CD it goes through the various loading screens until it get to the "F" logo right before (I assume) it should finish booting. However after this, the screen goes blank and does not load the desktop or ask me any setup questions. The computer does not appear to be frozen since I can still get to the command prompt using Control-Alt-F2, but nothing displays on the screen.

I am confident about the quality of the iso on my CD since I did the verification process and I can sucessfully boot on another computer.

I am attempting this on a Sony Notebook computer with a Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics card. Through my own research I have found this bug report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=505058
It sounds similar, but I am not sure how to execute the suggested solution to the problem.

I was able to install Fedora 11 (with Gnome) off the install DVD without problems, but I would prefer using KDE.

Can anyone help me with my problem?

I tried booting from the Gnome Live CD. Although it hangs for a while at the “f” logo screen, it does eventually boot to the desktop. So the problem I am experiencing (blank, black, screen after booting) seems to only occur on the KDE version.

SamBam,

I have the same problem. Gnome live media works fine, but the KDE version doesn't boot.

I am not certain, but I think the problem may be resolved by adding nomodeset as a boot option in the bootloader, as described in the above-linked reference.
I do not, however, know enough to be able to do this myself. Can someone please describe how to do this in more detail?

Since you have installed from the DVD you could have chosen to "customise" the install and then you could choose to install KDE. You could still do that if you wish and have more than one desktop to choose from at the login Enlightenment,Fluxbox,Gnome,KDE,LXDE,Sugar,XFCE etc I probably missed a couple too. :)

Thanks, that is a nice easy solution. It works now.

I did not know that the KDE option was available on the DVD. I assumed that the DVD was only for Gnome and if one wanted to use another desktop one needed the Live CDs.
