Do Fedora Team know that Orville is associated with a very annoying big fluffy yellow ventriloquist puppet bird over here in the UK? (If Orville wins I'm moving to Mint ;) )

blimey, I've gone through my whole life thinking Orville was yellow, I'm now in slight shock/confusion.

I'm sure Orville was yellow on my tv, mind you, so was Keith Harris' face (we couldn't afford a decent tv)

mmmm i don't really like any of those names. It seems to be going downhill lately, Cambridge also had lots more cooler alternatives. Well at least it isn't called Wacky Worm or something like that.

Of the list Constantine might be the least annoying one but I can't pronounce it without visualising Keanu Reeves in a very bad movie.

what happened to cool names like "terror" or "whiskey run"

but at the end of the day i dont care about the name. .as long as F12 is better than 11

better still? and here i thought F11 was great too?! well reading the tentative feature list i am already looking forward to F12. and if they ever create a nouveau that does decent 3d i will finally be rid of kmod-nvidia as well and can enjoy KMS like the rest of the open source community.

AdamW did say they may turn on 3D in the beta .. but i think the last of Gnome2.xx series should be better than any other Gnome, an KDE4.3 should be pretty good in F12 to. http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=223388

KDE4.3 should be pretty good in F12 been trying KDE4.3 beta2 lately, it is a definite improvement over KDE4.2. I never cared much for the KDE3.x series but since KDE4.2+ i am a convert.

i think Leonidas was chosen for being a ship in the UK royal navy rather then being based on "300".

i used to have lots of gnome apps even in KDE, but lately i have been more and more impressed with the KDE alternatives, i never like konqueror as browser or filemanager but dolphin is great, as is plasma, gwenview, kickoff, powerdevil, krdc (over tsclient) etc. The only GTK stuff i use is brasero (never did like k3b, maybe the QT4 version of Mandriva will be better) and firefox (still waiting for a QT4 build of opera_x64) and NetworkManager (there just is no alternative).

Especially as almost no one uses the name.

Cynically yours....

Hi,

It is not the same people. The people who do the naming thingy is not going to fix say any installer bugs anyway. It is a way to engage different kinds of people. If you don't find it interesting, ignore it.

Yes, but the theme of F11 was inspired by the spartan king (it's ancient greek), not the ship. It even says "Fedora 11: Reign." on the http://fedoraproject.org/ front page.

Do Fedora Team know that Orville is associated with a very annoying big fluffy yellow ventriloquist puppet bird over here in the UK? (If Orville wins I'm moving to Mint ;) )

Actually, I was the one, who suggested the "Orville" name (DISCLAIMER: so obviously, I'm biased :) ) and although I'm not from the UK, I also checked out some clips with Orville the Duck on YouTube - thought it was really funny, not annoying :) Teletubbies are annoying, Orville is cute :) Anyway, the main idea was to have something guitar related or music related. It's also the name of Orville Wright - one of the Wright brothers, so some airplane-related theme would also be cool. Check out the design team discussion at:

http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/design-team/2009-June/000065.html

There are some very nice ideas for themes there, not only for Orville, but also the others. Some of them I also like, but I won't tell you which ones, because, as I said, I'm biased :)

well of the list i guess Rugosa is the least sucky. I like the ways it links to Leonidas and the dozen part is also a good match to F12. I still would prefer something like Terror though with the F10 InvinXble theme.

ah well I am not particularly fond of GTK2 either, GTK3 is a ways off, so I personally would prefer a native QT4 build as well, although with qtcurver or the gtk-qt-engine it isn't that big of a problem anymore (visually at least, it still sucks I have to run GTK stuff in my "pure" KDE install). firefox is still GTK only as well, although there was a tech preview of a QT build once. For now just opera has QT builds.

how they will bring GTK / gnome to the 21st century then. I always liked gnome, but ever since 2.20 or so I have not seen much improvement, and even with all the things being broken in KDE4.0 / 4.1 I am really attracted by what the KDE devs are doing with it. Couldn't really find a direction they are headed with it or gnome3.

imho it is much like fedora, changing a lot of things, being first new technologies .... and yes at times breaking things that worked horribly whereas gnome is much more ubuntuish, gradual improvements and minor (visual) changes focusing on stability over features. I really like the whole plasma thing, and the fact that it runs pretty smooth on my GPU, especially since the release of QT4.5

wait till after 2.28 , we aint even seen Gnome3 yet , it might be as good as KDE4 . i just hope it isnt a disaster like Gnome2.0 was when it was released but i for one think at least Gnome has done it right where as KDE folks havent, KDE4.0 was pretty much like Gnome2.0 a disaster.

I could be wrong, but I think Gnome 3x will be built using existing software. (Sure I will be corrected). One of which is Gnome-shell, you can get it working easy now, I have tried it on Fedora 10.

Orville got third:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2009-June/msg00017.html

At close of voting there were:
393 valid ballots

Using the Fedora Range Voting method, each candidate could attain a maximum of
1965 votes (393*5).

Results:

1. Constantine 1167
- --[ Cut Off ] --
2. Umbria 941
3. Orville 792
4. Rugosa 740
5. Chilon 530

As such, Constantine has been selected as the release name for Fedora 12.

I don't like Constantine, it reminds me of a terrible Bulgarian pop-folk singer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrKfBrQySFc

Neo would be a cool name for F13, though.

Hi.

I have added some details at

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/History_of_Fedora_release_names

The wikipedia article on St Joseph's County illustrates the 'is-a' relationship with Leonidas. Not hugely imaginative considering a similar relationship was used to connect Sulphur and Cambridge.

Hi,

The creativity in the relationships is just one of the criteria. How many other relationships exist for example is another. Also many of the names are also trademarks which prevent them from being used as codenames. It the end, it is the name with the most votes from the community. and its all just for fun anyway. Don't take it too seriously.
