If you have yum I suggest you use that, it's really easy... Open a terminal and type

su (followed by your root password)

then type

yum update gaim

it should do it all for you, if not, the latest GAIM rpm I can find is 0.82 here:
ftp://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/dag/fedora/2/en/i386/dag/RPMS/gaim-meanwhile-0.82-1.1.fc2.dag.i386.rpm

We'll just have to wait until an RPM is released for it.

Well whats the difference between compiling the source or waiting for fc2 to come out?

Turnip
19th September 2004, 09:13 PM
Do you mean fc3? Well, you could compile from the source, but I'd prefer to install it using an RPM.

But I am such a man who can wait ... and don't even bother

Simply do su -c "yum update gaim" on the single line. That way, you won't have to log as root though you only need to enter a password.

Well maybe you badly worded your question then. Forgive me if I'm being stupid, but are you referring to waiting for an RPM for FC2 to come out, as FC2 is already out?

Hi All,

I just wrote an article "HOWTO: Rebuilding Gaim source RPM package for Fedora Core" based on Gaim 1.0.0

http://fedoranews.org/tchung/gaim/

You will find binary RPM package for FC1 and FC2 at the end of the article.

Tchung, followed your tutorial and installed it, but Gaim still shows as version 0.82.1 when I open the program. The install goes well and ends successfully...but then, no 1.0? I thought that perhaps I had installed in the wrong directory, but 'whereis gaim' shows /usr/bin/gaim /usr/lib/gaim /usr/include/gaim /usr/share/man/man1/gaim.1.gz . Perhaps I've installed FROM the wrong directory? Have tried from 'home' and 'usr/bin' and, as you can see, usr/share/man/man1 (desperation attempt). I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Hello,

What command did you use to install RPM package?

I would suggest to use:

$ sudo rpm -Uvh gaim-1.0.0-0.i386.rpm

"U" which is an option "upgrade" will also removes older version.

but why hasent gaim released the officeal gaim 1.0 for fedora?

bob
22nd September 2004, 01:29 PM
Thomas, thanks - that did it. Brain was just foggy and didn't think of the 'u'.

Turnip
22nd September 2004, 03:37 PM
Because you're supposed to get it from Fedora, not gaim, and so it's Fedora's responsibility to make an RPM for it.

earobinson111

ok is there any harm to using this non fedora version? and when fedora comes out with an update to 1.0 will u2date catch it?

SickFreak

Why is it when I type yum update gaim the yum begins to download headers to update everything and not just gaim?
