My main complaints are GUI related. Taking an Ubuntu route is not the right way when it comes to the Menu Bars!!!

thumbs up on taking the time to review software and show you care and take interest and are active enough to actually write and post it, the review itself is full of factual errors though.

I know. I'm prof reading it now. Should've done that before!!!
(Could you PM me with some specific ones because I might of missed some)

well i do not mean typos but more like things that are not actually kind of true for fedora in general or F11 specifically, or at the very least highly subjective and just your own personal opinion instead of merely stating the facts.

for example:

It doesn't have anything like YAST which is used in openSuSE instead it just uses the Gnome Utilities like Ubuntu

gnome utils are used for configuring well euhm gnome. but for many things that are done in YAST on opensuse, fedora uses its own system-config-* tools

Leonidas is an experimental release, which means it uses a lot of RCs and Betas such as Firefox 3.5 Beta 4.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraMyths#MYTH_-_Fedora_is_unstable_and_unreliable.2C_just_a_testb ed_for_bleeding-edge_software

Tighter integration with YUM and Package Kit means that it installs software faster than Apt which Ubuntu and Debian use

although yum/rpm have been much improved, it is hardly any faster then apt-get. maybe it is getting nearly as fast. and with yum-presto it is faster because of the smaller download.

It also has a feature called Presto

presto is a game, it is called yum-presto.

It has something called a PID lock this is standard linux nothing to do with yum, a process that is running often creates a PID file so the system knows it is running and what it's PID is.

YUM's Verbose Update
me personally think all that 4 line bla bla is highly annoying, i filed a bug against it even but they won't reduce it back to the way it was unfortuantely.

The upgrade to graphics performance means flash does not lag any more.
depends on your videocard, try using ati or intel and you will see there is still lots of issues with graphics performance.

but otherwise you have stated your own opinion really well and took the effort to let the world know, unlike me who is always too lazy to do so.

good work,
stefan

I'm going through the Wiki and fixing stuff its. Its too late for me to be writing reviews!!! (Midnight you know...)
I thought PIDs were a yum feature as ive only seen it when two instances of yum were running. Not on any other OS but a RedHat one!!! Prof reading isnt just
for grammar. And by definition a review is subjective!!! I knew it uses system-config-* i was being general as there's system-config in other Distros too.

Bleeding edge doesnt mean it has to be experimental software releases though >.< Like I said its subjective. I think Apt is slower now!!! (Dont get me started on synaptic package manager!!! Why do I need to rescan the mirror each time it installs a piece of software???) I like the extra verbose. I have a FireGL 9000 in this old laptop BTW!!!

End of Story,
I NEED TO PLAN BETTERER!!!
Its shocking since I want to do a 4 year degree instead of a 3 year degree in computer science!!!

It is not the "Ubuntu route" but the way upstream GNOME organizes the menu. You can however get categorization back if you prefer it by installing preferences-menu package.

PackageKit still does have a progress bar. it is merely in the left bottom of the application. Red Hat is actually responsible for PackageKit to a large extend since it employs the primary developer - Richard Hughes who also maintains gnome-power-manager.

As long as we know who is to blame. :)

Lol.

I'm extremely happy with this release. And to think I was thinking of switching to Ubuntu during the delays of F11. Totally worth the wait.

Re-Read it, I've fixed it a few times.

No, Im not talking about the progress Icons. In Fedora 10 it had a download bar saying how far through the download was. It's not present any more :(. Phil said something about it only being in the debug version.

Odd numbered releases often have a lot of experimental software what's up with that? unlike some software packages odd numbered fedora releases (or kernels for that matter) have nothing to do with its experimental state.

It uses Compiz on Gnome isn't metacity the gnome windowmanager instead of compiz? or did they change that default for F11, i am not on gnome anymore so i can't be sure.

stefan1975

It also has a feature by default called Yum-Presto yum-presto isn't enabled by default, you have to install it with "yum install yum-presto" first. for F12 it might get to be default.

Its just that I've noticed that the Odd numbered releases have a lot more experimental software than the even number releases. Mainly Firefox. Thats subjective just like my review  At least Im not going on about how crap windows is and how mighty is linux. They're... they're like Mac fanboys.

RedHat is developing something called Plymouth. It boasts 20 seconds or less plymouth is just about KMS, flicker free boot and the nice pictures you see while it is booting, showing X stuff before starting GDM/KDM, not about the speediness of the boot process per se. the speed part comes from another F11 feature:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/20SecondStartup

maybe you can use this stuff to make your article even better, should it get linked at distrowatch it had better be the best way it can be for the fedora community.

ah i see. well i think F10 had lots more things breaking then F9, but depending on hardware and karma everyones mileage varies of course.

I just did a clean install of F11 on my spare drive. I was running F9 on another drive. F11 so far has been solid and I have most everything I need now installed and working. Woot. F10 was just plain K-RAP out of the box and so I just stayed on F9. F11 is a HUGE improvement in out of the box quality. Nice work!

At this point, I doubt I will ever need to reboot my F9 again.
