I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. UNTIL I learn how to set up three monitors with Fedora 10 OR hopefully Fedora 11. Help will be greatly appreciated as this is my biggest obstacle in running Linux on this machine.
I don't have all the parts YET, but I will be posting updates. Tomorrow I will be rewiring and adjusting the cables within the case for better cable management and hopefully better cooling

With all that power it's probably a good thing that we can see a fire extinguisher in the background. Good knowing that you keep one handy! :p

I'm totally with you on the eyecandy, nothing like a nice shiny PC sitting on a desk :D
I believe you can buy a windowed panel for the Cosmos 1000 (I remember seeing one when searching for the same for my Cosmos S) - may be worth taking a look at Coolermaster's spares store :)

maybe im to old to care bout eyecandy but i couldnt care for it . i think compiz-fusion is better than that IMO. least you can playaround with it, with lights all you do is stare at it, how boring can that be

The point of eyecandy is to make the PC look nice and (in my case at least) to make it unique, for example I re-did the entire watercooling layout inside my case because I wasn't happy with the look:
Before
http://www.cwatson.org/gallery/albums/2008-08-30-watercooling/normal_38-Inside-Closeup.jpg
After
http://www.cwatson.org/gallery/albums/2009-03-30-new-watercooling/normal_IMG_1231.JPG
There's no difference in operation, I just wasn't happy with the overall look. Anyway, I'll stop hijacking with pics of my rig :D

looks nice alright, whats your address so i can break in an steal it an sell it for Drug money cause thats what a burgular will do .. must be age. when your my age you tend not to care what your PC looks like as long as it works
maybe when you both start to pay your own electricity bills you might think differently about " eyecandy"

Well, at least it gives me comfort that if you DO end up stealing my PC you will just pay your bills. BTW Craig's PC is worth about 500 dollars more (at least! maybe close to 1000 dollars more so leave my PC alone!!!!)

My Cosmos S needs two people to lift it, and I'd assume the older Cosmos weighs just as much, though mine has close to two litres of coolant adding an extra 2Kg. Good luck to any burglar that tries to take it.
In total, I've spent around £2,000 on it, which at xe.com exchange rates is $3,300. That includes powder-coating the case internals black, all hardware and two lots of watercooling (I ripped the first lot out because I didn't like the look and layout). But, on the other hand, there now isn't another PC in the world that is the same. It's totally unique to me, which I think is part of the point of eye-candy. Watercooling does have a function as well (it would be silly to spend hundreds tubing it up and running it stock), but you can't deny that it looks cool as well.

We tend to get the same way about cars too. :)
Craig, enjoy it while you can. Nothing wrong with toys. But always keep in mind that there are more important things in life. What is impressive to you is simply foolish to me. That said, many of my computers have flashing blue lights going on too, it is hard to keep away from the stuff these days. And I like the look. :)

I will - I built the PC as a very big investment (and I'm sure timmywear has done the same). I'm not planning any upgrade for at least 3 years, and then I'll probably be switching to Core i7 or whatever is the "biggest and best" at the time :)

I did roughly the same with my big rig four years ago. I spent around two grand american on it back then. It did hold up for three years and was still very fast with an AMD X2. Then my PSU fried and took out the mobo. I decided to upgrade the proc also to a 9850BE. Throw in 4GB DDR2 and I am good for several more years.
The thing is computer parts fell drastically between my builds. A top end computer is NOT an investment, it is a waste of money. If you can afford it and it is what you like to do then by all means have fun. But dont kid yourself into thinking it is an "investment." I can build a viable computer today for $300 that will better the performance of a $2000 computer built two years ago. I would rather build a second or even third generation computer today for a lot less and just plan on a new build in two years. TBH, computers hit a plateau several years ago where they are more than what we actually need. Look at GPUs. You are talking about frame rates that cannot be measured with the naked eye. What good is a few more FPS in a benchmark when in real life you cannot even notice the difference? Same for RAM. You are hard pressed to use 2GB of RAM let alone touch 4GB. Hard drives; I had 1TB when I first built my big rig. This is divided up between two 120GB and two 500GB drives. I strip the two smaller drives for the OS and mirror the two larger drives for the data. But I am coming nowhere near filling either. The point is, is the excess really worth the cost?
While we are dumping in Timmy Turner's thread, this is the latest build I did. Actually, my 8 year old son picked out the case and built it himself with the exception of the fron panel connections. I also went behind him torquing everything down, but he did all the work, even the wiring. It has an X2 5050e rated at 45 watts (power saver), 4GB RAM, a good 500(ish) watt PSU (I cant recall the name brand, but it is a good one), and 500GB sata drive. Optical is sata also (my first SATA optical drive!). We paid less than $400 for the parts and it is more than adequate for running Mint. It is set up in our living room and is definitely an eye catcher. I have had many guests comment on how cool it is. So yeah, there is nothing wrong with a little flash.

Nice case, with only one problem - it has a door .... d'oh! :D
Anyway, I've continued the discussion on performance PCs here so we don't pollute timmywear's thread even more: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=223608 :)

New pic update!!!
Pics were taking during the process of installing Fedora. Had my laptop ready in case I ran to any problems. :)
This PC is running ONLY Fedora 11 64bit. NO dual booting.
Feels good.
I also tried to have better cable management inside the case

Looking nice! :)
A tip for photographing the lights without getting it blurred - rest the camera on something solid (pile of books etc) and use a longer exposure time to get the light effect. Use a time-delay as well so you don't get any hand-shake from pressing the shutter :)

Nice!
Wiring management is definitely an art. One word of warning though, be careful running wires behind the mobo. I have had these cause shorts in the past.

Bills...
Yeah, Not me!
I'm still a student living at home (not for long though:( by next year I'm out) so my mom pays the bills. The only bills I pay are my cellphone bill and buying computer parts.
Not Green? No. If it was green it would remind me of an XBOX too much. Let's keep it blue. I would actually like purple better. Maybe later, when it is due for an upgrade. Right now it's still kicking!
