View Full Version : No wireless after manual kernel upgrade to 2.6.29.2 + headphones/skype sound issue

I have a Dell Studio 1537 laptop . I installed F10 on it. After the initial install the system upgraded itself to 2.26.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686.
I have
04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
I installed Broadcom wireless driver using this guide
http://www.cenolan.com/2008/11/rpm-install-broadcom-wireless-sta-driver-fedora/
and the wireless card started working.
I manually upgraded the kernel to version 2.6.29.2 in an attempt to get the bluetooth working. (It wouldn't start, but this is not a problem right now.)
After booting the newer kernel I noticed that the wireless card was no longer working. Since the Bluetooth wasn't working as well I decided to revert to the old kernel. Everything was fine until I discovered that the headphone jack gives no output, however the speakers do work. This situation is described here
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=209186
I read that in order to solve this problem, one should revert to kernel 2.6.27.7-134. However even after disabling the "only newest packages" under "Filters" in "Add/Remove Software", I wasn't able to find this particular kernel.
I tried booting the 2.6.29.2 kernel, and the headphones jack no output problem was solved. I had a problem with the sound in skype (the microphone wouldn't work), and this was solved too. Unfortunately the wireless wouldn't start.
I tried uninstalling and then installing again the broadcom-wl package, but wouldn't work.
I tried this guide
http://dnmouse.org/broadcom.html
it wouldn't work as well.

I don have any more ideas.
I'll keep using the 2.26.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686, since the wireless works under this kernel, but it's very annoying that everything except the wireless works with this kernel. :(

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello VitaminX,

The current (as of this moment) kernel versions in the Fedora i386 updates repo are these two...kernel-2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686.rpm
kernel-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.rpmThe two lastest kmod-wl (broadcom-wl) package versions in the RPM Non-free i386 repo are these two...kmod-wl-2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686.html
kmod-wl-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.htmlSo what may be happening is there is no RPM Fusion kmod-wl package (yet, at least) for the kernel that you installed. It's not unheard of for even the kernel in the Fedora updates to bust wireless for this very reason (the kmods are sometimes late). But updating to a kernel not yet in the Fedora updates repo was guaranteed to bust kmod-wl wireless. Where did you get that kernel (just curious)?

P.S.: Maybe you're using the akmod-wl version. That would be a different matter, I guess. You might be able to fix that situation by rebuilding the akmod package.http://fedorasolved.org/Members/zcat/akmods

Hello Stoat,

I forgot to write about this, but the system upgraded itself to the latest kernel (kernel-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686) today. I have this latest official kernel. I tried uninstalling and then installing again the broadcom-wl package but with no success.
However it seems to install the

kmod-wl.i686 0:5.10.79.10-2.fc10.4
kmod-wl-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.i686 0:5.10.79.10-2.fc10.4

packages

Installed:
broadcom-wl.noarch 0:5.10.79.10-1.fc10

Dependency Installed:
kmod-wl.i686 0:5.10.79.10-2.fc10.4
kmod-wl-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.i686 0:5.10.79.10-2.fc10.4

Unfortunately it does not have any effect, I mean the wireless is still not working. It works with kernel 2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686 though.

I installed the 2.6.29.2 kernel using this guide:
http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_fedora

I wanted to use the newest kernel because the sound issues are solved, but since there is no wireless it's useless. I'm not using the akmod-wl package, but I'll install it and post the results if any.

/edit

I've installed akmod-wl on the latest official kernel (2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686) and miraculously the wireless started working :) Unfortunately I still have the headphones jack and skype microphone input issue, actually the microphone doesn't work in any program.
