F10 not seeing SATA drives for install

Okay, just got a couple of sata drives that I want to put into a 2.5 year old system. Never used the sata ports before. I want to install F10 on these drives as 2 separate drives, not RAID. When I disconnect the old drives, turn on the new drives (sata function in bios) the install does not see the sata drives. The kernel sees the drives during startup but makes no use of them. (looking in /var/messages shows that the drives are seen and the sata_via is loaded I think.)

I have switched cables around, tried 1 drive at a time, with 1 of the old ide drives on. I haven't seen any way to get the installer to see the sata drives. Any suggestions?

can you see them with fdisk?
maybe try and see if something like puppy can detect them, ubuntu?
try with only one sata connected?

I had some trouble with sata when I installed one in my old box. I had to take the first one back and get one that I could throttle down to 150 or something like that, the WD I ended up with has a jumper for it.

Couldn't get puppy(gone!)
Tried Sax, Ubuntu, FC9, FC10 Live.
cfdisk, fdisk, none of the installers see the sata drives.
/var/messages shows that they both get throttled down 1.5 g.

Any other suggestions?

Did you go into Bios, and change from IDE to

Also, I took a look in /dev/disk/by-path (when using the FC10 Live CD) and I found 2 items that refer to sr0 and sr1, which I guess are the sata drives. So they seem to get counted at some point, then, forgotten?

I did enable the SATA Function in BIOS.
When I tried without one or both of the old hd's I also disabled that channel in BIOS.

looks like the sr0 and sr1 are your CD and dvd dives?

maybe you could try and disconnect one of those and only have one sata hd connected?

next you might want to try post up your mb and other hardware details, someone else might have a better idea for you?

followed a link from linux.org's distribution page. It was dead so I thougt the puppy was too.
I tried, I believe, all of the possible combinations of drives on/off, cables switched, channels on/off in BIOS, etc.
I'm at the point of guessing that the sata function on the mobo is dead. I don't have any windows intalls to try that with it. So, I'm stumped.
