pass perl variables

I need to write an authentication script that that passes $ENV{REMOTE_USER} to a perl cgi script. how do I write this, or how do I pass the variable.
I don't know perl. php is my scripting language of choice. is it possible to write the script in php and pass the variable to a perl script :confused:

or perhaps I can use a 401 header to request the authentication...

You probably want to use a CGI perl module (http://search.cpan.org/search?query=cgi&mode=all), particularly CGI::Base or CGI::Request. I'm not familiar with this, however.
