I recently decided that KDE was much to bloated for my little 300mhz IBM Thinkpad570 so I have been checking out lightweight desktops/wms. I tried Xfce4 which I liked quite a bit and used for a few weeks. I didn't like the fact the panel had no app menu, so I used the gnome-panel and I was happy. I then tried IceWM (which I had used before on my Mac) it was a tad faster but the application menu was missing a lot of programs and had some odd empty folders. I looked a blackbox which was far too hardcore.

What do you guys think the best lightweight desktops/wms are and why?

today's WMs do use a lot of ram.....flubox and xfc4 dont put a lot stress on your machine but as yo u can see they are a litte complicate to manage

have you tried another distro such as vector, featherlinux, collegelinux.....which are light wieght.

you can find them here: www.distrowatch.com vector will probably satisfy your needs.

i would prefer xfc4, it's really nice and lightweight for an old machine

I have considered other distros but since my CD-ROM drive is dead I'm pretty limited to what I can do. FC2 with Xfce runs well enough for me, I was just wondering what you guys' opinion on lightweight wms was.

If I go "light," I use Fluxbox. And there's a menu-creation which will read (I think KDE) system and user menus and set them up for you. And to be honest, editing the menu.conf file's not that difficult - it's very straight forward.

Fluxbox menus I agree are very easy to configure. It's very light also. If it's too much though I suggest hackedbox. It's a stripped down version of blackbox (which flux ofcourse is an offspring of). Other than twm or fvwm (pain in the ass IMHO to configure...but very configurable and powerful though light at the same time...again configuring just takes a long while) it's about as light as you're gonna get.

he said blackbox was to hardcore......so i guess fluxbox is not for him/her.
