Ive got numerous bugs with trying to install rawhide via a burnt boot.iso from my mirror. I dont think I have enough information to enter it yet onto the bugzilla.

Issue 1: I have SDA and SDB. I install to SDB, and the existing partitions are SDB1 EXT3, SDB2 SWAP then into extended partitions SDB5 EXT4 root and SDB6 EXT4 home. When I delete SDB5 anaconda fails with an unhandled excpetion.

Issue 2: When I try to report this to bugzilla using my account, the experience is pretty lame as the problem reporter just sits there doing nothing. I suspect the eth0 isnt configured at this stage anyway which raised the question of why even go into this user workflow when the nic isnt setup.

Issue 3: If I delete the last partition being SDB6 first, I can go further into the install. I managed to get all the way into doing a SDB3 200mb EXT3 boot, a 40gb extended EXT4 root but when I was trying to create the final 100GB home EXT4 partition anaconda again crashed with an unhandled exception.

Interestingly the Ubuntu alphas Ive been testing as well dont do this. Also I dont have the hassle of not being able to boot from EXT4.

I havent reported any bugs on bugzilla before but if this little detail is enough Ill create one.

Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 6 will be out tomorrow.

Fedora rawhide is freeze mode for Beta.
You will need to try everyday until they get the boot bugs fixed.
Check the threads in devl-list and test-list
There is lots of activate about the the state of Fedora.

Thanks, I'll check out those lists for package updates :)

Probably not enough detail for bugzilla. Just a guess though--I think they have a list somewhere or another of what information they need.

Ubuntu tends to be a bit more stable than Fedora. They do some things right that Fedora does wrong, and conversely, Fedora does some things right that I think they do wrong. At present, their goals are a bit different, so it's difficult to compare (especially in my case, I tweak my Fedora because it's where I do most of my real work, Ubuntu is something I throw on out of curiosity, or for a friend.)

Sometimes, it will just be an oddity with one machine, that you won't find with another identical machine, where one will install perfectly and the other fail.

Yep, different goals :) Certainly this release of Fedora has heaps more new features than Jaunty, so its understandable.

Anyway there is some progress. I found a new anoconda version from the rawhide report on the test mailing list so I burnt another CD to try it out. I'm pleased to say this time when it had an unhandled exception, the installer correctly went through setting up my NIC so I can report it to bugzilla.

This time it dumped a whole bunch of detailed traces and logs so hopefully the anaconda dev team can fix it.

Thanks, I'll check out those lists for package updates :)

I suspected the LVM updates may be the issue and behold
The next anaconda is full of LVM fixes (and gparted)
So be sure to try it for the 12th boot.iso.

If it fails, reboot and try removing the VG and the the partition and start over from from disk free space, building the parts.

Well its still happening on the new rawhide boot.iso with anaconda revision 11-5.0.28-1. Ive updated my bug report:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=489831

I tried to delete the existing partitions and create new ones. Anaconda failed with an unhandled exception as I was creating the last new partition, my EXT4 /home partition.

I had the same problem with the rawhide live cd that was posted for the Intel video testing. When I tried to install making a custom partition layout, it died. I just grabbed the latest boot.iso posted today. Hopefully it works...
