so I did an install on a dual processor p4 600mhz with 512 RAM I gave my swap partition 700mb. Upon reboot it hung on enabling swap space at that point I thought maybe the scsi card I had in the machine might be confusing things so I took that out. now it hangs at a different spot:
after Enabling swap space - OK

I am new to this so any help would be most appreciated. if you need any other sections in detail I can expand. Thanks.

The first questions that pop into my mind:

What happens when you put the scsi car back in? Does it hang at enabling swap space? How bad a hang is it? Does the hard driive activity light blink? Does the numlock led turn off and on when you press the numlock key?

With the card back in it hangs at swap space. the hard drive light will blink for a little while and num lock will work for a min or two then it will totally crash.
with the card not in it will hang for like 4 min at the code: 89 11 89 4a 04 8b 47 28 8b 18 8d 48 89 c8 ba ff ff 00 00
then the screen goes black.
thanks!

currently I am trying knoppix to see if it will run linux off the CD. seems to run fine.

Can you use knoppix to look at /var/log/boot.log on your FC2 installation?
and /var/log/dmesg

I will try and get back to you. Thanks!

I was able to get to the dmesg. it said I did not have permissions to see my boot.log. I will try again though. see below for the dmesg. thanks!

Adding 716680k swap on /dev/hda2. Priority:-1 extents:

Looking at my "dmesg" I see that the only hardware devices that get initialized after swap is added are my parallel port and my network. here are a few things you might try.

#1, Disable your parallel port in your computer's BIOS settings, did that fix/change anything?

#2, Disable your network adaptor in your computer's BIOS settings (or physically remove the card with the machine turned off) (my lawyer made me add that last part). boot, did that fix/change anything?

#3, touch a key to get into the grub "boot" menu, "a"ppend this to the boot command line you are using "single noapci"...

#4 Disconnect the IDE cable from your "ZIP" drive and try rebooting.....

Let me know how it goes!.....

My single processor machine completes the line with
Adding 10483312k swap on /dev/hda3. Priority:-1 extents:1
My suggestions would be to try to boot with a noswap option, just to see if it is indeed the swap or something after the enabling swap.

Some web research makes it look like your problem is usuallly not the swap but something after that step.
Unfortuately, which thing that is seems to vary and why certain solutions work is usually not explained.

Some suggestions were given by:
http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22763

This message claims the problem was fixed by using a non-graphical boot:
