I had realplayer running well but it stopped working after I installed the gstreamer mp3 plug-in. The symptoms were exactly the same as re[ported earlier in this thread - realplayer would not load and there was no related error message. I uninstalled realplayer, rebooted reinstalled and rebooted but still nothing. I then uninstalled the gstreamer plug-in and all is well in the real player world again.
Is there some sort of conflict between gstreamer and realplayer?
I thinmk this should be posted under Software so I'll do a seperate post there also.
Thanks

Yeah, you are missing the libstdc++.so.5 file.
You can either look on the FC3 CDs for the rpm, it will start with "libstdc++", or you can look on rpmfind.net, or the fedora download site at RedHat.

Here is the dependency you need. (http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/1601557/com/compat-libstdc++-8-3.3.4.2.i386.rpm.html)

The dependency needed is in the core distro - it's compat-libstdc++-33 (on CD #3). No need to go elsewhere.

I have a similar problem. I've installed RealPlayer10GOLD.rpm, but nothing happens when I try to play back streaming content from the Internet, on Firefox. I'm wondering if there's a conflict with mplayer-plugin 3.01. I'm using the latest Firefox, firefox-1.0.6-1.1.fc4, under FC4.
I also removed the HelixPlayer package, as suggested by instructions at a website I can't find now!
compat-libstdc++-33 is installed.

See if it's listed under about:plugins. Also see if the symlinks are installed in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins (nphelix.so and nphelix.xpt). I'm not sure but I think if you uninstall Helix Player AFTER installing Real Player, it may remove the symlinks (in which case you should try uninstalling and reinstalling Real Player to get them back).

thanks for the quick reply ..
I do have nphelix.so and nphelix.xpt in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. However they are also present in /usr/local/RealPlayer/mozilla/. I did remove HelixPlayer first.
I tried moving the pair in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, before symlinking from /usr/local/RealPlayer/mozilla/, but that didn't work either. Firefox doesn't spit out error messages, it just doesn't play anything ..

Are you guys talking about the new version (10.5 OR 10.0.5). Real Player has been available for quite some time now, since version 8 back in the day ;). They have based it in GTK in stead of (yuck!) motiff, which makes it blend better in your environment ;). For me it worked like a charm since FC3, and in 4 I didn't have to do anything special to get it working.

yea have been using it for a long time now. I most say though whats the difference wbetween realplayer and helixplayer and is their a point to helixplayer?
Thetargos
26th July 2005, 04:00 AM
In favor of helix player I must say that it is a very good mdia player, but as crippled down as it is in the Fedora default installation, I would say that it is not worth the effort of including it, since you can always get "the real thing", and best of all, get it installed and to work is a snap! So, is there a point for Helix? yes, is there a point for Helix to be included in Fedora? NO!
Edit: Just wanted to elaborate on the Helix part. There is a point for Helix if you want a very good media player but you don't need and can live without all Real stuff (formats, ads, etc) and still very usable media player. But since, due to legal issues, in Fedora it cannot be included with all its bells and whistles, there is actually no point to include it as part of the installation, save maybe for the occational .ogg stream you may actually find somewhere (if at all).

Hello,
The issue is that I have successfully installed RealPlayer10GOLD.bin using:
>> chmod a+x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin
>> ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin
During the installation program, I entered the following installation directory:
>> /home/progs/RealPlayer10GOLD
the rest of the installation finished normally without any errors, but now when I try to open realplayer from the menu I get:
CANNOT LAUCH ENTRY
Details: Failed to excute child process "reaplay" (No such file or directory)
P.S: I have already installed "compat-libstdc++-8-3.3.4.2.i386"
PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Where exactly is the realplay executable located? The launcher will usually try to launch the program from a location in your PATH variable. I.e a path where all executables are located and the shell only calls the names of the programs in those locations and can launch them without specifying the full path to the executable. In your case, you may want to try and place the realplay program under ~/bin, i.e your home's bin directory.

Thanks for your help Thetargos!
I used the hint you provided, and now the RealPlayer is running fine. Here is what I did:
I had installed the Real Player into /home/progs/RealPlayer10GOLD , and was therefore; suffering from the problem that I mentioned in the earlier post.
Then, I simply copied the "realplay.sh" (shell script file) from /home/progs/RealPlayer10GOLD to the /Bin directory.
This solved all the hassle.

Global places like /bin or /usr/bin are other places where executables of programs live in, however these two directories usually refer to globally installed programs, and in your case Real Player is only installed to your user's home directory. If there is only one user (besides root, that is) in the system, and you do not intend to share the system with any other users (i.e you won't be creating any other user accounts), then there's no problem leavin the calling script in a global directory like /bin, but if you will be adding other users to the system, you better
Remove the launcher script from a global path.
Globally install the program to make it available system wide.
P.S: Glad you got it working.

Hi, I'm a newbie and I just install fedora 4 a couple of days ago. I downloaded realplayer10gold.rpm, went into the shell as root, and typed in "rpm -ivh RealPlayer10GOLD.rpm" and it seemd to install. I can see it when I click on my applications tab under Applications > Sound & Video > RealPlayer 10... but when I click on it NOTHING HAPPENS :(... can someone tell me what i've done wrong? I tried installing it both when logged on as root and when logged on a user and just using root in the shell interface, but that doesnt seem to make any difference... the system just says that realplayer is already installed... any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks

Take a look at this (http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_4_installation_notes.html#Real). You probably did not install the compatibility libraries (compat-libstdc++-33) beforehand. RealPlayer was compiled in GCC 3.2 and FC4 uses GCC 4.0, so it won't install properly without them.

thanks... umm so I tried installing the compat-libstdc++-33 but it didnt work, I wonder if its because realplayer is already installed... could you tell me how to uninstall Realplayer so I can try starting all over with the compatlibstdc++-33 installation FIRST and then re-installing RealPlayer?

"rpm -e RealPlayer10GOLD" to remove. Then follow the installation instructions that I linked to in my previous post step by step. No need to remove compat-libstdc++-33.

Hi all,
Aahhhh! this real player is like a pain !!! I am having the same problem here. I installed real player first, and it did not work. I installed the library libstdc++3 (yum -y install libstdc++3), and then real player again after removing it, and it did not work. I then removed helix player and it still would not work. I tried to uninstall it with rpm -e RealPlayer10Gold.rpm, and I can not see it in Applications -> Sound & Video but the folder is still in "/usr/local/" and the "realplay" file is still in "/usr/bin/". and whenever I try to install it, it says that is already installed and whenevr I try to uninstall it, it says it is not installed!!! .....Can anyone help me please?!! :(

Well, to uninstall from command line, you do not need the extension of the package you're uninstalling, so the command you posted is incorrect. Just use the name of the package as reported by:
rpm -qa | grep [Rr]eal
On my system that would be:
rpm -e RealPlayer-10.0.6.776-20050915
Usually up to the second dash would be enough, but you may require the full name.
Second, to successfully make RealPlayer work under Fedora 4 I'm almost sure you need the compat-libstdc++-296-2.96-132.fc4 package, which can be installed with yum with only the base repository (i.e no extra configuration is required), just issue (as root):
su
password:
yum -y install compat-libstdc++-296
To install the missing dependency. You may require to re-install RealPlayer, should this be the case, just install with:
rpm -Uvh --force RealPlayer10GOLD.rpm
to avoid any messages about the package already being installed, and to successfully overwrite the previous installation's files.
Hope this helps.

Hi again... first off, thank you for your help! I succeeded in installing realplayer so it would work... i just had to uninstall and reinstall after the compat-libstdc++-33 was installed as advised :)... however, when i try to play mp3's on realplayer the sound is 'choppy' as though every second there is a small skip... i dont know if i need to make it compat with my sound card or something... i also know i never specifically installed "install compat-libstdc++-296" thetargos was suggesting... is this something that could be causing the problem, do you think?
once again, thank you in advance for the help!

Hi Thetargos,
It worked.....Thanx a lot :) .I followd the instructions you gave me to uninstall it. I tried to re-install with
rpm -Uhv --force RealPlayer10GOLDrpm
but it did not work. So I uninstalled it one more time and deleted its folder from "/usr/local". and reinstalled with
rpm -ihv RealPlayer10GOLD.rpm
and then it worked.
I also installed the library "compat-libstdc++-296" before the first reinstallation.
Thanx again Thetargos!!!

Hi everyone!
I know that the following question has been asked before, but I have no found a explicit answer to this question: How to uninstall Realplayer when it was installed via its .bin file in the the wrong place (for exam: desktop)?
Most of the suggestions that I have found are in the sense of "workingaround" the problem.
Cheers

When you install through the .bin file instead of RPM, what the installer basically does is to copy the files and place a launcher script in /usr/bin, so all you have to do, actually is to remove the directory with:
rm -rf /path/to/RealPlayer10Gold
And then remove the launcher script from /usr/bin:
rm -f /usr/bin/realplay
Needless to say you have to do this as root. There is the slight chance that the .bin file accepts an --uninstall flag, but that's highly unlikely, you may try to check whether it supports uninstallation through this method by running something like:
sh RealPlayer10Gold.bin --help
and see what options are available to the installer script. With any luck you'll see an --uninstall switch.

Orale Thetargos eres mexicano!!
Muchas gracias por contestar mi pregunta. Aprovechando si no es mucha molestia y en vista de que seguramente tu sabras.
I have been try to set up kaffeina to play realplayer files but without any success, when I try to play a .rmvb file I just have the sound of the file but not image and the following message appear:
"A Problem occur while loading a library or a decoder : drvc.so"
basically what I have been doing is:
1. Set up SELinux to permissive mode,
2. to change the permissions :
chmod 755 /usr/lib/win32/*
chmod 755 /usr/lib/codecs/*
3 to change the path where the xine engine has to look four the codecs. By default it is /usr/lib64/codecs so I changed to /usr/lib/win32 or /usr/lib/codecs
In any case nothing happen.
When I installed the codecs win32 what I did was download from MPlayer webpage
win32codecs-20040703.tar.bz2 and win32codecs-essential-20040703.tar.bz2 so I unpackaged and copied all the files to /usr/lib/win32
My system is FC 8 x86_64 in a laptop toshiba.
Cheers.
Viva Mexico chingaos!!
Thetargos

Síp, soy Mexicano.
So you also have a Toshiba laptop, huh? Nice.
To me the problem seems to be a difference in "bit size", lemme explain, even though x86_64 Fedora can run 32-bit programs on x86_64 architecture, you cannot "mix and match" 32 and 64-bit binary code (not always, and not without wrappers, anyway). I assume you are using 64-bit Kaffeine and Xine-lib, but the Win32 codecs are that, 32-bit binaries. Try uninstalling the 64-bit (x86_64) versions of both Kaffeine and Xine-lib and leave (or install) the i386 versions, only. Then Xine should be able to find and load the appropriate .dll for the codec. If you have already tried this, I'm affraid you may be out of luck... You could check the Xine mailing list or its archives and try and see if anyone else has had this issue.
Sí, caray! Viva México, cabrones!

Thanks Thetargos,
As you said, the most probably is that I am out of luck because I had installed FC6 i386 and kaffeine and xine had the same behaviour and now that I changed to FC8 x86_64 it is the same... anyway this matter does not bother me at all 'cos I have realplayer installed but it good to know how to solve this kind of problems.
Many thanks.

Problem: MPlayer and kaffeine are unable to play the video format of .rm and .rmvb files then the following message appears:
A Problem occur while loading a library or a decoder : drvc.so
System: Fedora Core 8 x86_64 in a toshiba laptop.
Solution: Download the codecs "essential-amd64" and copy the conteined into
/usr/lib64/codecs/ (kaffeine engine must be set up such that it looks for the external codecs in this path)
/usr/local/lib/codecs/ (for MPlayer)

the command to be copied and pasted is
chmod u+x r1p1_linux22_libc6_i386_a1.bin
and there is no gurantee that it too will work, because the filename can be different. just understand what the command does. the command
chmod u+x <some file>
gives execute permission to the user, who types the command, which would be you , i.e. oem , for whatever file that you place after the command. The filename of the realplayer software downloaded should be typed after
chmod u+x

again your commands, are all wrong and dont seem to make sense, do it like this.
http://fedorasolved.org/multimedia-solutions/win32-codecs
and you need to type (or copy-paste) one line at a time, not all the lines at once; each line is a command that , and you need to execute each line successfully and without errors before moving to the next line, except for the "Optional Step" mentioned there. You need to copy-paste the entirething...because that is one command.

no i meant...
chmod u+x r1p1_linux22_libc6_i386_a1.bin
this will change the permission of the file r1p1_linux22_libc6_i386_a1.bin
you might need to substitute the name r1p1_linux22_libc6_i386_a1.bin with the file that you want to give execute permission to.
a much simpler alternative to install realplayer is to use dangermouse script. (http://dnmouse.org/autoten.html) its all gui...check that out
as for starting out and learning linux...
take look here
http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/basic.shtml...in general you might find this site(www.reallylinux.com) pretty useful
and http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/files.shtml
