View Full Version : F10 Live KDE CD: no available TEXT mode in installation?

Hello:

I have some probs with installing X windows on my system from a Fedora 10 Live KDE CD, so I tried to get around it by using at the Boot prompt the

text skipx interactive

options for the Anaconda installer, in order to bypass the X part, and do the rest of the install on the hard drive (and come back later from the hard drive) but the installation still gets in X mode, where it hangs.

Can't the "text" mode work with the Live KDE CD? (I read something about it, but I'd like to be sure).

Mind you, at p. 39 of the book (Negus, Fedora 10) with which the Live KDE CD came, the author mentions:

text: type "text" to run installation in a text-based mode. Do this if installation doesn't seem to recognize your graphics card. The installation screens aren't as pretty, but they work just as well.

Thanks.

Wow, no one really has tried this with the Fedora 10 Live KDE CD?

hit tab twice at the boot screen and add 'textinst' to the boot options

('liveinst' for normal graphical install)

Indeed!!

Thank you very much.

Why all the docs (and the Negus book on Fedora) mention then "text" and not "textinst"?

For a standard install from a dvd or cdset 'linux text' is correct. But with the livecds the installation method is a little different, since no package selection is possible, you just dump the uncompressed live image to your install location, so perhaps it's good to differentiate from the full installer.

I agree that the docs could make things more clear, not many people realise you can install from the livecd straight from boot.

How does the Ubuntu LiveDVD do it, does ESC followed by 'linux text' work there?

I've just discovered that:-[

I'll need to get me a DVD drive to do the right thing from DVD.

Thanks.
