Whenever I try to play a video on YouTube or any internet video for that matter, the place where the video should be playing comes up blank. Is this something to do with my PC or the Internet connection?

When this happens you should get a message (I guess you are using Firefox) relating to missing plugins. You need Flash. See http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f10.html#flash

No, I don't get any message, it's just a grey blank area without any of the play options. Even when I reload the page it doesn't work.

The message is usually in a bar below the tab bar.
If you haven't installed flash it won't work.

If your a newbie or just lazy like me use install scripts from dangermouse and easylife and you will have a very functional desktop in no time, easiest and fastest way. Of course you wont learn a whole lot about linux.
