I have a confession. Pardon me for saying it, but I've alway been some what fickled when it comes to distros until I came across Fedora. Now, after FC1 and FC2, I think I will always be a Fedora man. With that said, BF, (Before Fedora) I was quite loose; Easy, one might say, when it came to distros. I've even been called -dare I say it?- a distro Ho. Oh the shame. To be one that can't say no! Well, I've been straying again. No, no, I'll never leave Fedora. I love you. But lately I've been playing around. Slackware is the new object of my desire. And while I might always love you Fedora, Slackware is the bad boy that has caught my eye.

It certainly is different. When the easy install distros are not a challenge any more or when you want to push your limit, distros like Gentoo or Slackware are the ones to take you there. There is a lot of hair pulling and gnashing of teeth but one learns so much doing it the hard way. Get rid of my beloved Fedora? Never.

I'm exploring Slackware only because I have a 'test box' on which to installed it. I've been reading about the geekoids distros of choice for some years and none of them had any attraction. Mainly because it took so much to get it installed and configured. Gentoo is still not the way to go for me. Days just to get a base installed? No way. But because I want to expand my knowledge and am willing to learn, Slackware seems like the one to play with.

Will I ever leave Fedora? No, I don't think so. It the distro I feel comfortable with. It's the one every other distro is judged by. But walking on the wild side can be fun. Gosh, I feel so nasty!

Cheer up, AliOop (oop, oop-oop - sorry, couldn't help it). Back in the Dark Ages, Slackware was all there was - it has a fine tradition of excellence behind it. If I hadn't gotten so durn lazy in my old age, I'd probably still be gritting my teeth, er, lovingly embracing Slack.

Okay, that last bit is plain wrong - because I did start with Slack (plus the actual state of what we collectively call "Linux"), I've learned a lot about the hows and whys and the philosophy of what makes up a distribution package. And, what I consider the greatest aspect, is that one has a choice on where he/she wants to go.

If you like to play with distro's in your spare time, have you looked at Arch Linux? I'm hearing good things about it although I've not had a play yet. I'm the same as you - I love fedora, but I'd like to try some others too before I make a life-long commitment :)

I've got quite a bit of old Pentium II kit lying around which struggles with FC2 so I've recently got involved with Vector Linux. It's based on Slack and I can see why you guys like it. I've learnt loads in the past couple of days getting a PII Toshiba 320CDT working with VL. I'd recommend it for people who want to keep their old kit working - Open Office 1.1.2 works OK with it too!

If you fancy a play the VL forum is pretty good (not as good as here) and the site is: www.vectorlinux.org.

Cheers

I also have a PII/400 laptop with Slackware 10.0 installed (we're all sinners...), just to play with it.
Does any of you know how to configure it's Gnome logout screen, such that an option to shutdown the system shows up, like in FC? I'm tired of having to "su" in a terminal just to "shutdown -h now". RTFM didn't help. :( (gnome-system-admin-guide, gnome-user-guide, ...)

Thanks! ;)

On shutdown: I too have looked for a way. Nothing yet. But I use "halt" as SU. The probing and poking and head scratching go on.

Cracker: "Cheer up, AliOop (oop, oop-oop - sorry, couldn't help it)" That dates you. Didn't think any of this young forun crowd even knows who Ali Oop is much less heard the song.

I think you'll find that there's a number of us old pharts hanging around. Regardless of age, this is a pretty good crowd to hang around with. :D

As Fedora Core 2 is my first installation can someone explain the concept of slackware?

http://www.slackware.org. The concept explained. Visit the site, read it, download the ISOs and try for yourself. Fedora is a more friendly distro, specially for newbies, but Slack is also very nice. Not so polished, but very nice. :)

EDIT: Oh!, and Fedora of course has the best forum!
