Who has successfully upgraded going from F7 x86_64 to F9 x86_64 using the yum approach? I have had about 0% success getting everything to work correctly doing a fresh install of F9. Everything works correctly in F7( sound, firefox/flash, networking, samba, etc ), so I figure that starting with something know to work and upgrading to F9 might be a better approach that starting with F9 and having it guess. Opinions, suggestions, comments....

How about a comment...
I've always been under the impression that jump stepping upgrades was bad (7 to 9), the changes being a bit too radical. Progressive upgrades (7 to 8 to 9) can be enough of a headache.
Just my two cents...

OK, thanks for that. I have also been having a lot of trouble just trying to install F8. After the initial install, everything works great. After I do an update through yum, my sound card stops working and I can not get firefox to display any flash. I would like to move off F7, but not if I can not get everything to work.

Maybe backing up your personal files, and doing a clean install wouldn't be a bad idea at this point.

F7=>F8 upgrade, truly "live" via YUM, was the most painful upgrade for me yet. I would not like to repeat it, ever. I do not even want to reveal how long it took, nor how much janitorial work was involved to finish up. But it can be done, depending on how much pain you can endure. Or enjoy.
The new preupgrade utility turned out even worse F8=>F9. I've still got two installs limping along somewhere in limbo between F8-9.
Try a spatula.
Good Luck,

I have done a fresh install a time or two with both F8 and F9, but neither works correctly after the install and/or first update. In F8 I can not get the sound card to work along with firefox/flash. Same thing with F9, but samba is completely broken. I do not know why F8 and F9 have such problems. F7 works great on the exact same hardware!
The sound hardware is not exotic: Sound Blaster Audiology. Pretty proven technology for years.

To the best of my knowledge flash player in 64 bit has been (and may always be) something of a pita. As far a sound is concerned most any issues I've had with sound in recent times can be traced back to pulse audio. Which in my less than humble opinion ain't quite ready for prime time. One issue I've had with my SB Audigy is if your motherboard has onboard sound, Fedora may be trying to use it first even if you have it disabled in bio's.

Flash is better now with a native 64bit version (yea, it's an alpha, but hey).
